Armstrong takes over the leadership of a restructured restructured School Board, comprised comprised of 10 elected trustees and one appointed trustee representing the First Nations of Alderville, Curve Lake and Hiawatha. The amalgamated amalgamated Board structure, encompassing North umberland- Clarington and Peterborough County, has been reduced in size from 28 to 11 voting trustee positions. Chairperson Armstrong stresses the smaller Board will face numerous, critical critical issues in the coming months, including continued continued provincial restructuring restructuring of education. "As we evolve into one school system, trustees will continue continue to focus their efforts on preserving the many attributes that exist in each Board. The work of the Local Education Improvement Committee has greatly advanced the Boards' progress with amalgamation," says Armstrong. "Priorities in the new year will focus on sustaining equitable and quality programs, preparing preparing for the new funding model, and pursuing a 'seamless' amalgamation that minimizes any disruptions disruptions to student learning and instruction." Armstrong was first elected trustee for The Northumberland- Clarington Board of Education in 1985 and currently represents Alnwick, Hamilton and Cobourg. Elected to the position of Vice-Chairperson was trustee Helen Osborne, tion dedicated to encouraging encouraging and promoting the art and skill of writing, fostering literacy, and providing providing moral support to writers through education and networking, both independently independently and in co-operation co-operation with existing organizations. organizations. For many homeowners, a fireplace is a much- desired feature especially around this time of year! In addition to providing a cozy atmosphere, a fireplace fireplace can add to the decorative decorative value of a home. Properly maintained and used, it can also increase overall heat efficiency. Fireplaces come in a variety of shapes and sizes from the traditional masonry type made of brick or stone, to the prefabricated prefabricated metal and freestanding freestanding models. For a fireplace to work efficiently, the firebox (area above the hearth where the fire is built) must be large enough to contain a fire, draw sufficient sufficient air for combustion, have a smoke shelf to prevent prevent downdrafts from pushing smoke back into the room, and a damper to close off the outside air when not in use. The chimney chimney should be smooth and relatively straight with a cap rising above the roof to avoid downdrafts. There should be no large trees or buildings near the chimney that may divert airflow. Regardless of the type of fireplace, it will only heat efficiently if it was built correctly and is well- maintained. For instance, a fireplace that was built 30 or 40 years ago will often suck more heat out of a home than it contributes. Some fireplaces can be made more efficient simply simply by installing one or more heat-saving additions additions such as: Mantel If your fireplace has no mantel, you should add one. A mantel above the opening aids heat retention from the firebox. Instead of the heat rising straight to the ceiling, the mantel acts as a deflector, sending warm air into the room. Outside air intake While a fireplace may throw heat into a room, great quantities of warm air will also be taken away if it only draws air from inside the home. To preserve preserve your home's heated air supply, install outside air vents to fuel the fire. There arc a variety of options available. Some building supply stores carry ready-to-inslall air vent kits that arc set through the back wall of the fireplace. Grates A raised grate helps to circulate air for the fire, resulting in a holler and stronger blaze. For greatest greatest fuel efficiency, the grate should be as wide as the firebox. Newer grate designs arc more efficient than the common steel grate. One example is the convection U-shaped grate made of hollow tubing with open ends facing the room. The grate draws in normal air from the room through the bottom and forces the same heated air out through the top back into the room. Heat reflectors These arc pieces of metal attached to the back walls that direct the heat toward the fireplace opening. opening. They work well in older masonry fireplaces where the firebox is fairly large. Glass door fire screen This prevents heated air from going up the chimney when a fire is smouldering and the damper must still be kept open. It is also a good safety feature. Even with a fire burning and the doors closed, you can still enjoy the fiâmes and receive warmth since the glass reflects heat into the room. Heat exchangers These are usually power-assisted units that often come combined with grates and glass screens. An elcclrically-opcratcd blower pulls air through the grate and sends heated air back into the room. Some units arc completely built into the fireplace, while others feature a box- Iikc blower that sits on the outside hearth to the side of the firebox. Fireplace inserts If you arc really energy conscious or want to use your fireplace to substantially substantially increase your homes heating efficiency, consider consider installing a device that converts the fireplace into a ncarly-airtight, wood- burning stove. Made of heavy metal or cast iron, these units arc built along the same principle as a wood stove. Many have broad doors with a viewing viewing glass to enjoy the fire's appearance. Similar to stoves, these airtight units use draft controls so you can adjust heal output and burning rates. General maintenance If you have just purchased purchased a home with a fire- : place, you should inspect it thoroughly to ensure - there arc no significant structural problems. This includes checking the chimney for leaks and making sure it meets all the basic requirements.
