* i 11- J U' Lacrosse Team Shooting for $40,000 Green Gaels Begin Fundraising Drive by Chris Rourke Staff Writer The Clarington Green Gaels Jr. B lacrosse learn head into the 1998 season confident of their on- floor product. But if they don't gel sufficient funding, funding, it could go to waste. The Gaels moved to Bowmanville from Oshawa this past season and operated on a $20,000 budget. The Gaels arc the prohibitive favourites to win the Founder's Cup Canadian Jr. B title next season, so they'll need to raise a minimum of an additional $8,000 to make the trip to Akwesasnc, near Cornwall, next August for ' the National Championships. With the budget closing closing in on $30,000, the Gaels arc actively searching searching for a major sponsor. Even though the team will need $30,000, Gaels Vice-President in charge of fundraising, Terry Rowland, has higher goals. "I want to raise $40,000", he said during the team's general meeting meeting . at the Recreation Complex on Tuesday, December 9. "The extra money will allow us more freedom to do certain things." The Gaels have plans in place to raise the funds, but they still need a major sponsor. sponsor. The team hopes to raise $5,000 from a golf tournament tournament in the mid dle of June, as well as $12,000 from sweater sponsors. The big fundraising draw this year will be for an autographed Eric Lindros jersey. They hope to raise $20,000 from that draw. Gaels Manager of Operations, Dieter Kirner, said without this money and a major sponsor sponsor "there's no guarantee, money-wise, whether we'll finish the year or not". The team appointed its Board of Directors and it's as follows: President - Mike Ambler, Vice President - Terry Rowland, Manager of Operations - Dieter Kirner, General Manager - Jim Bishop, Treasurer - Charlie Marlowe, Head Coach - Kevin O'Brien, and Assistant Coach - Dave Edgar. The Gaels arc also looking for people to fill other Board positions, such as program director, fund-raising, advertising, promotion, sponsorship, secretary, as well as two directors at large. They're also looking for a game announcer, DJ, Booster Club, security, security, and travel (busing, etc). If you arc interested in any of these positions or wish to sponsor the team in some capacity, contact Dieter Kirner at 576- 9222. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, December 17, 1997 Section Two Busy Weekend for Preston the Mover Pane 3 rte: Lange's Foto Ready for Silver Stick It was a wild time in Whitby as the Lange's Foto Source Toros defeated the Wildcats 3-2. The line of Andy Chamberlain, Brooks Robinson and Michael Daly controlled the first period. Assists to Robinson and Daly on both goals as Chamberlain put the Toros in command by two. Whitby battled back before Daly made it 3-1. The Wildcats scored the last goal of the game at 2:28 of the second period. Goalie Kyle Moore held on for the 3-2 win. It was off to Markham to clash with the Thunder, in what turned out to be a very physical contest. On a set up by Jesse Bradburn, Michael Oliver notched his first of the season. Three goals in the second period were scored by Jason Emond, from Pat Lenahan, with Michael Daly and Jason Morrison notching unassisted goals to put the Toros up,.-by...four. The Thunder came hack with two, pulling their goalie for the extra attacker but could come no closer. In the final stages of the game the Toros goalie, Ryan Hibbard, who was outstanding outstanding in net, was slashed and had to leave the game. A couple of Toros came to his defense, only to find their way to the penalty box. Kyle Moore came in cold and preserved the six on three player advantage Markham held to end the game. Another road trip to make it three in a row for the Toros as they faced the Stouffville Clippers. The Toros seemed to be out of gas as they came up flat, finding themselves down three goals in the first period. period. Justin Ross finally took charge midway in the second second pulling the Toros to within two goals, on a nice rush from the point. Unfortunately that was the only goal the team could score as they were soundly defeated 4-1. The team, always giving their best effort in league play arc preparing themselves themselves for their Silver Stick qualifier being held in Vaughan over the Christmas Holidays. This reminded the boys that they would like to wish the coaching staff, their parents and everyone associated with kid's hockey a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Gens Forward Invited to U.S. Jr. Team Tryout The Oshawa Generals arc welcoming the arrival of overage Dan Hinotc hack to the team. The 7th round pick of the Colorado Avalanche has been released from the Hcrshcy Bears of the American Hockey League, and was expected to be in the lineup last night (Friday) against the Sank Stc, Marie Greyhounds. The Rogers, Minnesota, native will help holster the offense, while at the same lime, provide valuable experience experience in the dressing room, Last season with the Generals, lie had 15 goals and 13 assists in 60 games. The Clarington Minor Atom Toros, sponsored by Preston the Mover had another another busy weekend, playing three games in three nights. They managed to come away with two ties and a loss. On Saturday night the Toros travelled to Lindsay and started with a bang, taking taking a 3-1 lead. But the Toros let Lindsay back in the game as they quit skating fora period period and soon found themselves themselves facing a 4-3 deficit starting the third period. However, the Bulls never gave up and with just 3 minutes minutes to play, Nathan Murray gave the Toros a well deserved tic with an assist to Brad Farrow. Matthew Parker had two goals and Derek Cobb added a single to round out the scoring. Ryan Webb contributed two assists with Matthew Smith, Tyler Beers and Jordan Bcaudrie with one assist each. Matthew Cooper started in goal for the Bulls and was outstanding, as he was called upon to make a stop on a penalty shot early in the first period. Robbie Goddard came on in relief and did a fine job holding Lindsay at bay until the Toros could tie the score. On Sunday afternoon the Toros hosted the Markham Waxers, but could not find the scoring touch, as they fell 3-1 to the visiting Waxers. Tyler Beers scored the lone Toros goal, with an assist from Derek McCron. On Monday night, Clarington travelled to Pickering to face the first- place Panthers. The Bulls had revenge on their minds for the early season defeat at the hands of Pickering and came out flying once again to take a 2-0 lead. But the Toros started to tire as the effect of three games in three nights took its toll and soon the Panthers chipped away at the lead until they tied it up early in the third period. But the Toros found the energy to hang on for their second tie in three nights. Once again the goaltcnding duo of Matthew Cooper and Robbie Goddard did an outstanding job, keeping keeping Pickering off the score- board to preserve the tie for the Toros. 7^ H GENERAL TIRES 235X75-R15 AP RAISED WHITE LETTERING S 110."ea balanced and installed GOODYEAR 205X70-H14 Prices in effect until Dec. 31, ... 1997 GOODYEAR SNOW TIRES SN °"™ ES *85."- s 90. ea. ea. balanced and installed balanced and inslalled BROCK'S SERVICE CENTRE 160 Church Street 623-5487 Bowmanville UlJVi /&'*! imuiiiuuiiik ÜÜIIIIIIIIM& Color Your World The name, value anil excellent products Hint you have trusted for years.
