\ f The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, December 17, 1997 Section Two Page 9 BHS Students Collect Toys, Food for Families by Cheryl Higgins with Christmas just around the corner, questions questions run through our minds about what we will be receiving for Christmas. However, what about the young children and their families who are wondering if they are even going to- get anything this year? For some of these families their wishes will come true. From now until Christmas, the students and staff of B.H.S. will be supporting the following local organizations: The Salvation Army; St. John's Church and The Durham Regional Police Toy and Food Drive. The students have been asked to donate non-perishable non-perishable food items, assortments assortments of small stocking stuffers, Canadian Tire Money and small donations donations of cash to purchase children's toys. Each homeroom is responsible for purchasing a toy for a specific sex and age group. Also, each homeroom will decorate and fill a food donation box. St. Stephen's School News Drama Cjgss Presents "Why Christmas" by Elisha Ribeiro The Christmas spirit is alive and well at St. Stephen's. For the last few weeks our' students have been involved in collecting collecting clothing for ARK, a youth shelter located in Oshawa. They have also been involved in collecting collecting non-perishable food items for needy families. The campaign was very successful as students were willing to give of themselves. The music program at St. Stephen's has also been involved in spreading spreading Christmas cheer. They have been travelling around to all the feeder schools demonstrating their talents for the local youth. Music students also performed in Tuba Tuba, the horn festival held in Toronto. The LINKS group, the Music Ministry and the Band brought Christmas goodies and ;some festive music to the elderly at the Strathavcn Lifecare Centre. Their jolly spirits were warmly welcomed by the residents of Strathavcn. The OAC Drama class is preparing to present their annual production which will be held on December 18th at 7:30 in the auditorium. It too has a Christmas theme to it and is called "Why Christmas?". Tickets can be bought through the office by calling 623- 3990. A Coffee house will be held the week of December 15. This is a lunch time concert displaying displaying the musical talents of our students. There is a variety of music performed performed and lots of goodies to be sold. Student Council has many events planned for the Christmas season, they include showing Christmas movies at lunch, getting pictures done with Santa, •and decorating a Christmas tree of wishes. In other news, college applications have been distributed and are due back in to the guidance •office on January 9, 1998. •Christmas holidays start 'on December 21st and students students return to school on [January 5th. The students •of St. Stephen's would 'like to wish the community community a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New [Year. Written by ! Elisha Ribeiro Student council will award pizza parties or donut parties to the homerooms homerooms with the most non- perishable food items, best decorated box and the most Canadian Tire money. Lcanne Jennings, Mrs. Shank, Mrs. Gcrtzoz and the rest of our student council arc responsible for the organization of this wonderful cause. Christmas is the perfect opportunity for people to start caring about others rather than themselves. We must all realize that Christmas is a time for giving, not only receiving. We should keep the true meaning of Christmas at heart. If anyone would like to make a donation, it would be greatly appreciated. appreciated. Remember that Christmas is a time for children, and if they can't be happy at Christmas, who else can? Also, due to the shortage shortage of elves at Santa's workshop, selected students students have been asked, by Santa, to write back to the children who have written a wish list, to inform them that he did receive their letters. The students at B.H.S. would also like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
