That's how The Statesman's Wednesday, June 4th, 1902, edition described the celebration in the provincial election of West Durham. Supporters of Wm. Rickard were marking his victory in the West Durham provincial election. The festivities make today's political events seem rather tame by comparison. But, they were being described by a journal which had declared itself a steadfast supporter of the winning candidate. This is how supporters celebrated on election eve in 1902, having learned of their candidate's 110-vote majority.. "...When Mr. Rickard arrived from Newcastle he was greeted with cheers of victory from the doorsteps and shop doors. The boys mounted him in an armchair and carried him through King Street and. soon as a procession could be organized the Dominion Organ Band was secured, horsemen led the crowds and' with the victorious William Rickard, MPP, Robt. Beith, MP., Dr. J.C. Mitchell, J.W. Renwick, President, and M.A. James, Secretary of West Durham Reform Association in the first carriage and a long line of vehicles and people on foot, they paraded the principal streets." The celebrations continued on Friday night when electors from town and country massed on the market square and, headed by the Dominion Organ and Piano Company's band, formed in procession and proceeded to Newcastle, Mr. Rickard's home. A second procession, with the Orono band, arrived from the north. The proceedings were further described as follows: "The farm residences along the entire route were brilliantly illuminated and some were gaily decorated too. Almost every dwelling and shop in the village was illuminated and Chinese lanterns swung across the streets." At Mr. Rickard's residence, there was more music, speeches from all the dignitaries and "a rattling good speech by Mr. Rickard himself." The group dispersed after lunch and coffee was served and there were rousing cheers for the new MPP, the Liberal government of Hon. G.W. Ross; the local MP and the King, Those Were The Days PORT OF CALL-- The schooners Oliver Mowat, Caryeth and Jameson were the first boats to call here this season, The Statesman recorded on April 16, 1902.
