CLARINGTON PROJECT PROJECT -- The Kirby United Church presents Warren Lamondin, guest speaker from the Oshawa Clarington Community Living Association, who will discuss discuss Ihe Clarington Project A look at some of the trends and events that shaped this century as seen through the pages of The Canadian Statesman. Red Coats Capture Bowmanville "The Dragoons were favored with magnificent weather last Thursday for their Thanksgiving manoeuvres and the officers were able to bring off the rather ambitious program which they had prepared without a hitch and without casualties if we overlook a few shoes loosened or kicked off by the horses and some stiffness resulting from a day in the saddle to those troopers who are not accustomed to riding every day." That's how The Statesman of October 22nd, 1902, described training exercises by members of the III Prince of Wales Canadian Dragoons A Squadron. In the war games, the dragoons were divided into two groups. One was instructed to capture Bowmanville and the other to defend. The Statesman's editor rode along with the troopers advancing from Maple Grove, obviously relishing his new role as "war correspondent." They encountered the "enemy" to the west of the Gaud farm, in the big ravine. (Perhaps the one currently crossing Highway 57, just north of Hwy. Two.) The attackers managed to outmanoeuvre the defenders who had moved their forces too far north to defend the town. The attacking party galloped down Scugog Rd. to the fork at Middle Rd. There, they dismounted and were able to defeat the town's defenders who were circling back to find the enemy. In the afternoon, the tables were turned when the troopers who attacked were assigned to defend the town and vice versa. This time, the attacking army hid in an orchard and behind a barn on Munday Rd. and managed to capture successive patrols as they moved out from town to engage the enemy. The day concluded with the practising of movements in the drill shed, followed by an old- fashioned charge, "which, if of doubtful utility, at least gave the troopers and horses good fun." Those Were The Days FAREWELL FOR VILLAGE DOCTOR -- Close to 500 friends attended a send-off for Dr, J.C. Mitchell who sold out his medical practice at Enniskillen to Dr. Frank C. Trebilcock. The party look place June 2nd, 1902. Dr. Mitchell was later elected president of the Ontario Medical Association and was appointed physician to the Provincial Asylum. OBITUARY FOR A HORSE - "Mr. Chester Power, we feel very sure, has the sincere sympathy of every farmer in the district in the great loss he has sustained by the death of his Clydesdale stallion, Ingram's Heir. He was taken sick Friday week at Newcastle and in spite of the best veterinary care died Tuesday morning." --Statesman June 18, 1902 HOLIDAY EXCURSION - Monday, July 21st, the lakcfronl communities were invited to partake in a steamer excursion to Niagara Falls. The steamer Argyle left Newcastle at 7:00 a.m. and Bowmanville at 7:30 a.m., returning by the light of the moon. Adult fare: $1.25. Nearly 400 attended the outing. A second excursion was held in August and a similar day trip (by rail) to the Thousand Islands was also held. PAY YOUR DEBTS - "Nothing gives us more satisfaction than paying the debts we owe. The next greatest pleasure is to receive the money that is owed to us. It has been a business rule with us to pay cash and we commend this rule to everybody else." -- M.A. James, The Statesman, Oct. 15, 1902. MAN KILLED BY WINDMILL - The Statesman reported the tragic death of John M. Jones who died when his arm was caught between the cogwheels of a farm windmill. The Dec. 4th, 1902, article reported that the previous Sunday, Jones had gone out to shut off the windmill early in the morning. But, lie was caught in the machine and was not found until seven or eight a.m. Despite the best efforts of local doctors, he died later that afternoon.
