He said he hopes that the recommendations from the inquest arc put into action "for the protection of the children." With tears welling up in his eyes, lie added, "I loved her." Another Clarington resident resident honoured at the awards ceremony was Donna Bcnford of Newcastle. She noticed a burning house on a concession road north of Newcastle Village as she was driving to work early one morning on May 29th, 1997. She parked lier car, got out, and went into the house to wake up the family family without thinking of her own safety. Donna Bedford, of Newcastle, entered o burning house to wake up a family Since then, Hugh and Corrinc Allin (the home owners) have kept in touch with Bcnford. After receiving the award from Police Chief Kevin McAlpinc, Bcnford added that she doesn't think she did anything any other citizen citizen wouldn't have done. In an October 1997 Women's World magazine, her heroic heroic story was re-told for many to read. And this June, she will be getting married. Other award recipients were Veronica Thornbury who rescued a child from a pond in Brock Township; William Spears who helped the police collar a potentially armed and violent violent suspect in Ajax; and Oshawa resident Cord Park who assisted police in apprehending a robbery suspect. The final recipient was 13-ycar-old Bradley Williams who called 9-1-1 when a break and enter took place at his home in Whitby. He called the emergency service when the culprits entered his home. He stayed on the line to inform the police of the make, model and license number of the suspects' suspects' vehicle and their descriptions. He also was able to give the police the direction in which they fled. Initiative New parents in Clarington now have a service service that helps them give •their newborns a healthy start in life. Since February, Memorial Hospital in Bowmanville has participated participated in the "Healthy Babies, Healthy Children" initiative recently launched province-wide by ; the Ministry of Community and ' Social Services and the Ministry of Health. Its focus is on prevention of problems and early intervention to ensure families have access to the supports and services they need to give their babies the best start in life.
