OHL Title in Sight The Guelph Storm are one win away from the OHL title, and advancing to the Memorial Cup. Local connections are overage forward Jason Jackman, and Darryl McArthur, who played one season with the Bowmanville Eagles. Midget Girls Finish Second at Provincial Tournament The Ganaraska Wolves Midgcl girls' volleyball team have something to cheer about. They will be one of the two teams representing Ontario at the Midget girls' Nationals that will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from May 1-3. It has been a long road for this talented squad, yet in hindsight, it was well worth it. Talented Squad Head coach, Tom DeJong, knew that he was equipped with a very talented squad of players this year, including his strong captain, Stacey Gordon, who is presently being scouted by National women's team head coach, Doug Rcirncr. Sara Hartman, from Clarke High School, and Krista Klawitter, from Courlice Secondary School, were also key players in the team's success and hopes for the future. Tom and his staff were hopeful that all would go well at the Ontario Championships that were held in Stratford. The Wolves entered the tournament ranked seventh, yet were able to go through pool play undefeated. From there they went on to defeat the Ottawa Roos 15- 10, 15-6. They advanced to meet the Titans, the number two ranked team in Ontario. It was a gruelling match with the Wolves losing the first game. Yet the girls were able to fight back, winning the next two games 15-8, 15-1. In the gold medal match, they faced the number one seeded team from Hamilton. The Wolves lost the first game 16- 14, but came back to win the second 15-10. In the final game, they lost 15-13. Although-it was a disappointing loss, it still gave the Wolves an entry into the National Championships. The team has been practicing at numerous venues in preparation for this upcoming weekend. The girls and coaches coaches will leave Wednesday, April 29, and will arrive Friday morning in Halifax. It is an exciting.time for the team, coaches, and everyone involved, especially those who have shown their support throughout the season. National Championships OFF TO NATIONALS - The Ganaraska Wolves Midget girls' volleyball team qualified for the National Championships that are being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They placed second at the Provincial Championships that were held in Stratford. Doug Brown Golf Tourney Helps Out Charities Harness horse driver Doug Brown will be trading trading in his sulky for a golf cart when he hosts his 4th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament on Wednesday, June 17, at Lakeridge Links Golf Club. In the past three years, the charitable tournament has raised a total of $71,300 for the Durham Children's Aid Society, and the Harness Horse -Youth Foundation. The year, along with the Harness Horse Youth Foundation, the Sheldon Kennedy Foundation will also be a big benefactor of the tournament. The Sheldon Kennedy Foundation will assist in the development of a treatment ranch for child victims of sexual abuse and their families. Funds donated to the Harness Horse Youth Foundation will be placed in the Doug Brown Scholarship Fund, to be distributed to Canadian students seeking post-secondary education. Among the list of celebrities for this year's tournament are legendary Boston Bruins defence- man Bobby Orr, as well as Sandy Hawley, one of Canada's top thoroughbred thoroughbred jockeys. Brown, who resides in Bowmanville, has been the leading harness racing driver in Canada for more than a decade. He is among only nine drivers in history to win more than 7,000 races. To mark his accomplishments, accomplishments, Brown will be inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame in May.
