Thirty- three members of the Newcastle Lions along with seventy-five Past and Present District Officers, many family members and spouses assembled to honour honour Newcastle Lion Brenton Rickard on fifty years of service to the Lions Organization. Zone Chairman, Terry Graham introduced the following head table guests, Jim and Romona Rickard, Don and Gail Rickard, Stan Rickard, President George and Lana Rickard, Guest of Honor, Brenton Rickard and his wife Jean, District Governor, George Fournier and his wife Mona, Terry and Jean Graham. Lion Murray Paterson, in his welcoming remarks, introduced Brenton and Jean's immediate family and gave a brief history of Brcnton's fifty years in Lionism. President George, then asked the Lion members and guests to introduce themselves. Introduced by his brother, Lion Jim Rickard of the Bowmanvillc Club, Don Rickard, as Chairman of the Agriculture Administrative Committee for The Royal Winter Fair, gave a very interesting and informative talk on the history history of the Royal Winter Fair and plans for the future. He also showed some slides of the fair in its newly expanded format. format. Don was thanked by Lion Howard Quinney. Many other long term honors were handed out by President George, with the help of District Governor George Fournier, Kingston, Region Chairman John Ogden, Bcwdlcy; and Zone Chairman Terry Graham they presented Chevrons to the following Lions. 30 year chevrons went to Lions Pat B laker and Stan Powell, 40 year chevrons to Lion Dick Lovckin and Mabel Goode, who accepted accepted on behalf of her late husband, Lion Ray Goode and 45 year chevrons to Lions Murray Paterson and Roy Watts. Past and Present District Officers in the persons persons of Past District Governor Bob Garden, Frank Stewart, Doug Galt, Mark Cornish, John Thompson and George Fournier were given the opportunity to relate their experiences and to thank Brenton for his contribution contribution to Lionism over the past 50 Years. Patterson, to Brenton, thanking him for his dedication dedication and contribution to Lionism. President George, then presented Brenton with his 50 year chevron and certificate. Even though the evening was a complete surprise to him, Brenton thanked all those who came, some from considerable considerable distances and for their kind remarks. President George thanked those who helped to make the evening such a success, especially his wife Lana, Lions Peter and Sierd DcJong and Roy Hopkins. A Roaring Career in the Newcastle Lions Club Brenton Rickard received his Lions International 50-Year Pin during a well-attended well-attended dinner at the Newcastle Community Hall on Wednesday night, April 22. He's shown here with his wife Jean, the President of the Newcastle Lioness Club; and his son George, nephew Jim and older brother, Stan. Brenton Rickard has held a number of positions throughout his 50-year tenure with the club, including Club President, Zone Chair, Deputy Governor, District Governor, Chair of the Multiple District Effective Speaking Contest for three years and the first chair of the A3 District and for nine years following. He has been the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the Brian Stevenson Award, and was the founding father of a school for incoming officers for the A3 District. Recent visitors with Stan and Kay Powell were Leta and Morley McAllister of Elizabethville. On Saturday Stan and Kay Powell, the Wayne Hunts of Pontypool, Judy Powell and Lynn Pigott of Oshawa and members of the Markle family had a get-together at the home of Beth and Wayne Markle, Scarborough before son Andrew returns to his work in Calis, Colombia. Mrs. Pauline Storks attended Hydro Committee meetings meetings in Toronto on Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday Kingston meetings were attended. Birthday greetings to Beatrice Campbell, Carol Gray, Joel Rickard, Joe Smith, Jenna Nugent, Ruth Couch, Vincent Norton and Evert Vierhout. From Thursday to Sunday Marie Trim of St. Ola visited visited her sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Marg Wade. On Thursday they were among family members for the interment of Bernice Henderson at Lakeview Cemetery, Newtonville. All returned to the home of Fred Henderson for lunch. Miss Candy Storks is moving from Keewatin to Brockville where she has a position with the Children's Aid Society. We welcome Candy back to Southern Ontario. There was a quarter of an inch of ice on the Crago's bird bath on Monday morning. So, don't plant lender flowers yet! The Senior Bowlers enjoyed their monthly luncheon and afternoon of cards on Tuesday. Draw winners were: June Wilson, Ruby Brunt, Stan Powell, Marion Allin, Bertha Powell, Art Compton, Helen Nesbitt, Marilyn Martin, Bill Polak, Vi Hayward, Waller Murphy, John Tigwell, Elizabeth Skclding and Sheila Stiles. Card winners winners were: Art Compton, Alec Martin, Marg Wade, Marilyn Martin, Eva Smith, Alice Hopson, Bertha Powell and Lil Bolderstonc had the two hidden numbers. Low score was won by Bessie Dean. Thursday overnight guests of Alex and Marilyn Martin were Lloyd and Betty Martin of Manotick. Lloyd and Betty also visited his mother Theresa at Strathavcn, Bowmanvillc, On Thursday night Petty Officer First Class Larry Perrin and his wife, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, were overnight visitors with his parents, Jack and Eleanor Perrin. On Thursday evening Pam Daley held an executive meeting for the Newcastle Horticultural Society. President Pam gave out information on the June 12 to 14 OHA eonvention at Trent University, Peterborough; Cullen Gardens Rose Show June 26-28; Cullen Gardens Flower and Vegetable Show July 24-26 and July 16 District bus and boat lour to Parry Sound. Newcastle Horticulture Society's Spring Flower Show and plant sale will be held on Tuesday, May 19th. Please label plants for sale. The Newcastle Ratepayers Association members met on Thursday evening, April 23rd in the Lions Room. Willie Woo chaired the meeting.
