The Clarington North Ratepayers are unhappy with a municipal report which, the president says, hangs them out to dry. The report from the Clerk's Department recommends recommends that with the curfew in place and assurances assurances that mufflers will be placed on stock cars for the oval track, the 1998 racing season will "cause less disturbance for the residents in the immediate area of the park." Clay Taylor told Clarington's planning committee members on Monday morning, May 4, that over the years the organization has negotiated negotiated with the municipality and Mosport's owners in good faith. He said this new report will wipe out all of the compromises made by the local residents and present them with more noise as a result. Taylor noted, "our association, association, jointly with the municipality and Durham Region, withdrew from the OMB hearings last year as a gesture of good faith, however today I regret that we trusted the actions of this municipality and withdrew. withdrew. "You sec, this report docs absolutely nothing to ensure that the residents of North Clarington will have the peaceful enjoyment of their property that they arc entitled to." The organization's . members have plenty to fears, he said, as the new owners of Mosport get ready for their racing season season using both the oval and road track for various events. One of these events could well be the CASCAR 300 kilometre slock car race at the road track. Taylor noted that the Toronto Sun newspaper said the major event will take place at the end of August. One resident who lives near the north end of the road course track suffers through the worst of the noise, he said. In the past, noise levels from the track have reached levels "near the noise of a jet aircraft taking off.' down, it will be at the same level that it left the park." After their debate, councillors decided to table the report from the Clerk's Department which suggested "dispensation from noise levels con tained in the municipality's municipality's noise by-law be allowed for Mosport Park in the areas directly to the northeast and east of the park." It is not known when the issue will be before councillors again. // f -- 'vS • ;f -* Y 1 ail Personal, Professional Investment Advice from Ted Trueman If you have any concerns about your investments, talk to Ted, your RSP/RIF expert. During the committee members' debate, the idea of putting up a sound barrier barrier fence was discussed. Mayor Diane Hamre said there isn't enough space between the track and the edge of the property property to build a berm which, according to her sources, would be one of the best solutions to Krcbelj's problems. "The noise hits it and it scatters the noise into the atmosphere, softening the noise," Mayor Hamre said. However, Chief Administrative Officer Bill Stockwell noted that is not the case. He says a berm does not soften the noise. It only scatters it, and "when it docs come What do I need to know to Buy One! 1. Determine the size you require. Too many buyers look for a spa that will accommodate the needs of a large party. It is best if you pick a size that best suits your lifestyle unless you, will be entertaining very often. If your family consists of 3 • 5 people we suggest a medium 5 - 6 person spa. For larger needs spas accommodating accommodating up to II people at a time are available. Just remember they will be larger, cost more to buy, more to maintain and to operate. For couples only a spa that holds 3 - 4 people will provide ample room and maximize space and operating costs savings. 2. Determine where you are locating your new spa. In recent times, the trend has definitely definitely been for most spas to be installed outdoors. If you plan on regularly entertaining in your spa, and the idea of staring into a star-filled sky on a peaceful night sounds wonderful wonderful then your choice should be to locate it outside. An outdoor location should be picked where you can protect protect your privacy from neighbours as well as cold winter winds. A privacy lattice or fencing is a great way to ensure these two conditions are met. Locate the spa relatively close to your entrance so that you can have the fun and exhilaration of coming out of your warm relaxing environment and feel the tingle of the colder surroundings surroundings about you. Decks are very good locations, just make sure your deck can withstand 200 lbs. per sq. ft. and you'll be fine. We recommend operating your spa year round since our models are built for such use. Operating costs are $12 - $ 15/month indoors, ranging to $30/month if located outside during winter months. If the spa is being installed indoors then good locations are solariums, sunrooms, and large family rooms as. well as basements. Door sizes and indoor obstacles may be a problem depending on size. We have spas available that are made in two piece and are easy to be put together once in the right room. An exhaust fan may be a good idea if the area does not have good ventila lion already. It produces almost no moisture when the hard cover is on however when in use the rapid move ment of water and air will increase the humidity in a room. All spas and electrical appliances within 10 ft. of the spa must be protected protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter. interrupter. These protective devices protect protect you and your family against any ground faults and other electrical malfunctions. They are required and all spa installations must be inspected by Ontario Hydro to ensure your safety. 3. Spa colours and materials, By far the acrylic materials provide the best gloss long lasting and excellent excellent resistance to chemicals, sunshine and aging. New granite colours arc now available for those who prefer a more roughed-up appearance versus, the high gloss smooth finishes. Look for long warranties to make sure your shell is built to last for years to come. 4. The amount of pumps and jets that conic with your new spa will vary from model to model. Captains rejuvenator seating and lounge seats are very popular indeed. You may not want to share them!' Look for models that allow you to face each other so you can talk while] both of you arc in these favourite seats. A spa with 10-25 jets is adequate adequate for most buyers. Next week we will continue with' the remaining factors to determine- when buying a spa. 1 P.S. No voice mail at the Comfort Shoppe,, so call anytime evenings included! DollarS & Sense with Deborah Kohlsmith Financial Consultant Women and Investing Women and spending money may be synonymous, but usually not women and investing. For many women (his is a subject they are not the least bit interested in and prefer it thal way. However for those women who are looking for a financial consultant the key appears to be developing a 'relationship' which is built on trust. Many women feci because they do not understand anything about investing they shouldn't gel involved. In my opinion, this is the wrong altitude to have - the learning process lias to start somewhere. We all must ask questions in order to become more educated and have a better understanding of nn issue. In discussing investment issues with women they want to know that you understand their particular situation and arc in fact listening to what they are saying. Women typically over many generations have not dealt with 'financial' situations - die finances were, and in many cases continue to be delegated to a man. In speaking to many women, that is just (lie way it has been, however most women will say to me they wish they knew more about their household bills, investments, RRSPs, pensions, mortgages, etc. All is not lost though if you have never learned about investments (here is always time to educate yourself and become more familiar with the terms and how they relate to your individual circumstances. There are several statistics available that indicate that women, as well as men, should have a solid knowledge about all aspects of their financial lives. The life expectancy of females is greater titan the life expectancy for males (approximately 7 years longer). Many then will die married, while women will usually die widowed. Therefore many women will be looking after their financial situation at some point in their lives, whether they want to or not. Women, most often, earn less than men over the course of their lives. Women-usually have smaller investment or RRSP portfolios and most women do not belong to pension plans. These statistics would indicate that women should begin to learn more about investing in general and more specifically, develop their own relationship with money and a financial consultant.
