Mr. Humber, a local historian, entertained all in attendance with the story of Fred Higginbottom, r Bowmanvillc's only 2 Stanley Cup winner. To round out the night, a motion was passed to donate $ 1,000 to the local chapter of the CNIB in support of our community's blind. The Lions would also like to remind everyone that the Annual Duck Derby is being held June 20th. At only $5 each, tickets are going fast. Mr. Trudeau knows what a great gift idea it is; he received three copies for Christmas last year! ractors Big Brothers At Kids' Day ; On May 9, Big Brothers of Clarington will join Dr. Simina iat the Bowmanvillc Family Wellness Centre in celebrating "'Kids Day International", a Health, Safety and Environmental 'Awareness Day. Chiropractic Offices nationwide will partici- ] pate in "Kids Day International". ' The event will run from noon until 3:00 p.m at 234 King St. 'E. and will focus on Crime Prevention, Child Safety and Environmental Awareness. The day will offer a wide variety of activities for both adults and children. Parents will have a chance to have their children linger printed by the Durham Regional Police and Dr. Vclji will donate a child ID card to all children in attendance. Kids will learn fire safety tips from the Clarington Firefighters and .have the opportunity to meet Sparky and Elmo as lie makes a special appearance in Clarington. Kids will also receive a free balloon, snacks and the opportunity to enter draws for prizes. Recycling and environmental awareness information will be provided by the Clarington Public Works department and Big Brothers of Clarington will provide information on volunteer volunteer opportunities available within the agency. Dr. Vclji will offer special spinal exams and scoliosis screenings as well as information on disease prevention and health promotion. All donations received will benefit Big Brothers of Clarington. Pathfinders Take Oaths of Citizenship On Wednesday, April 29th, 1998, the members of 5th Lighthouse Pathfinders, Bowmanvillc were presented with their Citizenship Certificates in a formal ceremony held in Court Room #1. On hand were several distinguished guests, including Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre, Local Councillor Jim Schell and John O'Toole, MPP for Durham East. Citizenship Officer Solange Fournier renewed the Oath of Citizenship with all attendees and presented presented certificates to Pathfinders Jade Key, Kandice Peltier, Brandy Cook and Amber Key. Parents, previous Guiders, District Commissioner Judy Townsend and Unit Leaders Charlynne Tillcock and Brenda Peltier shared their enthusiasm enthusiasm in the girls' accomplishment. accomplishment. Pathfinders is the program program in Girl Guides of Canada for 12 to 15 year olds. The Pathfinder Citizenship Certificate is a new addition to the program program this year. To earn this distinguished award, the girls were required to complete complete nine program challenges challenges that covered topics such as good citizenship, local government and the election process and symbols symbols associated with Canada and it's provinces. Renewing their commitment commitment to Canada was a very personal and inspirational inspirational experience. The ceremony gave the girls an opportunity to express their allegiance to Canada and reflect on their rights and responsibilities as citizens, both now and in the future.
