I The Claringlon/Courlicc Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, May 9, 1998 Page 13 Finance Minister to Visit Durham East The Long Term Care (LTC) announcement made last week is good news lor Durham and indeed all Ontario. The $1.2 billion commitment commitment over the next eight years is the first commitment commitment of new money to LTC since 1988. This will add 20,000 new beds for people in nursing homes and homes for the aged. It will mean $550 million new dollars for community-based community-based services like in- home nursing, therapy, homcmaking, meals on wheels and supportive housing for the physically disabled. The announcement announcement will add 175 new facilities lor seniors and renovate 100 older facilities. facilities. For Durham Region, there is $28.8 million for an additional 847 LTC beds plus $33.8 million for community based services. The $62.6 million investment in Durham is long overdue and is part of the overhaul of the delivery delivery of health care. Besides making life easier for many elderly and their families, we arc acknowledging the fact that our population is living living longer and needs the infrastructure in place. I have heard many times that people recover faster in their own homes if the supportive services arc in place. Besides the thousands of families that will have better access to services, there will be other economic economic advantages. It is estimated that this announcement will mean 27.500 new front line health jobs as well as 42.500 construction jobs. Our Health Minister, the Hon. Elizabeth Wilmcr, outlined that she anticipates 7,900 registered registered nursing positions as well as some 19,600 health care aides will be added to the system. This is a 69% increase in funding for Long Term Care. The Health Service's Restructuring Commission Final Report for the GTA/905 area was released this past week. The Commission calls for an investment of $1.4 billion billion for hospitals and over $700 million reinvested annually in new services. The report recommends two new Cancer treatment facilities, one of which will be at'Oshawa General Hospital. The Commission has suggested reinvestments reinvestments in cardiac care as well as adding $39 million for surgeries and increasing increasing by 19% the emergency and ambulatory patients at hospitals.
