Green Gaels Perfect to Start Season by Brad Kelly Staff Writer With the exception of the scorcclock in the first period of the home opener opener on Friday night, everything worked to perfection for the Claringlon Green Gaels this past weekend. The Jr, B lacrosse team opened its regular season with a pair of lopsided lopsided ■ victories over Scarborough and Kahnawake. On Friday night, the Green Gaels posted a 19- 5 victory over Scarborough, followed by a convincing 15-2 decision over Kahnawake on Sunday afternoon. Both games were played at the Recreation Complex. Against Scarborough, Bryan Power fired four goals, with two apiece to Stefan Hcwak, Rob Fodor, and Duke McNutt. Claringlon led 5-2 after the first period, and extended the lead to 15-4 by the end of the second. " 'Tin 'Sunday; McNutt fired five goals, with three apiece to Wayne Richard and Power. Claringlon took control early, leading 5-1 after the first, and 7-2 after the second. Back-up goal- tender Mike Miron came on in the third period in relief of starter Ray Dance, and shut Kahnawake out over the final 20 minutes. Despite out-scoring the opposition 34-7 in the first two games, coach Kevin O'Brien found some things for his team to improve on before their next outing. "I was a little disappointed disappointed with the discipline discipline of a couple of the guys who let their energy go in the wrong direction," direction," he said. "Other teams arc going to try and take us off our game, But, when we have guys, in the penalty box, we lose the flow in our lines. There are only so many guys who can play on the power play or kill penalties." penalties." With two relatively easy victories, and quite likely many more to come as the season progresses, progresses, the biggest enemy the Green Gaels might be faced with is complacency during games. Should that set in, O'Brien expects the leaders of the team -- Stefan Hcwak, Bryan Power, Rob Fodor, Duke McNutt -- to push the other players so that the team doesn't fall into a deep funk. "It's going to be a struggle sometimes," said O'Brien on the question of staying motivated. motivated. "But it's a nice luxury to have. "At this stage, we're not as good as we think we arc. And, if you don't win at the end of the year, nobody cares what you did during the season." season." The Green Gaels will hit the road for their next three games with stops in Akwcsasnc (May 15), Kahnawake (May 16), and Huntsville (May 19). Their next home game will he on Friday, May 22, against Huntsville at 8:00 p.m. "We want to help teach the kids what we have experienced overseas and in North America," said McCrory during a recent interview from Lanicl's home in Courticc. "Why go to Toronto, or Peterborough, or to the big schools when we have the same calibre instructors in the area?" McCrory asked. Since graduating from the junior ranks, McCrory spent four years playing in the AITL, three in Austria, one in Italy, and three more in the IHL. "We'll be doing a lot of skill work," said Lanicl. "This is not a Triple A camp, it's a skills camp. Even the pros have to practice their skills every day. We're going to use a lot of the techniques we've learned in Europe that are slowly coming over to North America." Operating a hockey school is nothing new for McCrory, whose father has conducted one in Sudbury for close to 25 years. The SHOT hockey school has been in the planning stages for over a year. "We've done our groundwork. This isn't something we've put together in a couple of weeks," said McCrory. "We've got some of the best instructors that you will find, and we're local. Kids, who come to our hockey school will get a European flair that they won't find anywhere else." The three separate weekly sessions will run from July 6-10, 13-17, and 20-24.
