The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, May 16, 1998 Former Oshowa Generals Offering Hockey School with European Flair Improving skills and character, with a little little European flair, arc the ingredients that a couple of former Oshawa Generals arc hoping hoping to use to make their summer hockey school a huge success. Marc LanicI and Scott McCrory arc combining combining their efforts to operate the SHOT (Summer Hockey On-Ice Training) Hockey School that will debut at the Ice Sports Arena in Oshawa beginning beginning in early July. "This is not a Triple A camp, it's a skills camp. Even the pros have to practice their skills every day. We arc going to use a lot off the techniques we've learned in Europe that are slowly coming over to North America," said Laniel. Teammates Laniel and McCrory, who were teammates teammates in the late-1980's with the Oshawa Generals, found themselves on the same roster roster again this past season. But they had to go to Europe to be reunited. Both were members members of the Schwenningcn Wild Wings in Germany. Prior to their tenure in Germany, LanicI, who was a third round pick of the New Jersey Devils, played four seasons in the AHL, and five more in the IHL. McCrory played four years in the AHL, three in the IHL, another three in Austria, and one in Italy. Other instructors at the camp that is endorsed by the Oshawa Generals !■ will be Brent Grieve and Brian I ■ Drumm. Both arc Oshawa Generals alumni. Grieve spent time in the NHL with the Chicago Black Hawks and Los Angeles Kings, and is currently an assistant coach with the Generals. Drumm played seven years in the AHL, and began last season as head coach of the Peterborough Petes. An emphasis will be pul on skating, passing, passing, shooting, and stickhandling during the hockey school, with is designed for kids aged 6 to 15. In addition to the hour and a half of on ice training per day, there will also be close to an hour of dryland training to help improve flexibility and conditioning through the use of plyometrics. "We've got some of the best instructors that you will find, and we're local. Kids who come to our hockey school will get a European flair that they won't find anywhere else," said McCrory. Weekly sessions run from July 6-10, 13- 17, and 20-24. Players will be divided into three age groups of tykc/novice, atom/pec- wee, and bantam/midget for each weekly session. Do Flat Feet Need Treatment? QUESTION: "Telma, I have read with interest your articles on flat feet, especially flat feet with children. What I don't understand understand is, why do I need to see a physiotherapist if I have flat feet?" This is a good question. question. For example did you know that all children have flat feet until about two years of age? They look like they have flat feet and this is partly due to the fat pad in the inner arch of the foot. We call this the longitudinal arch. In other words, the arch is not fully formed until age two. All children under 2 have flat feet. Really we are talking about the child beyond age two and older who has flat feet. First of all what is this flat foot? In medical terms we call it pes planus. A pes planus or a flat foot is a foot that rolls in. If you look at a person from the back, you see that they are taking taking more weight on their inner arch than they should and therefore the foot flattens. This is why we call it flat foot. A flat foot affects how that person person walks, you can see this with a computerized gait analysis. The way the weight is taken by the foot changes and if you watch that person walk, you will notice that the way they walk changes. There are three parts to walking. First the heel strikes the ground, then we roll through the middle part of the foot and then we push off with the first and second toes. This is normal. normal. When a person has a flat foot, two things can happen: They take too much eight through the heel C on the side of the foot that is flat. You will hear, what is referred to as the elephant foot, slam, slam, slam. The heel hits much harder than it should. You can also see this in the gait scan because there is a red area under the heel. With time this will put a strain on the spring ligament under the foot, what we call the plantar fascia and the person could come down with plantar fasciitis or heel spur syndrome. The other way patients will present with flat foot is that they do not heel strike very well. Instead they roll in to the inner arch and push off. You can see this on the gait scan as well. With this kind of patient the problem will not be as much plantar fascia, but the problem will be further further up the chain. In other words, if the foot is not taking the impact of the ground well, the problem will reflect in the knees, the hips or the back. In the next article we are going to cover how having having flat feet can give you a problem in your knees, your hips or your back. Hence, if you have a flat foot, it can put a strain on your heel itself. This may give you a heel spur syndrome syndrome or may lead you to have knee/hip and back pain. We offer a free computerized computerized gain analysis with a 30 day money back guarantee and a two year customization warranty.
