The third year veteran with the Clarington Green Gaels Jr. B lacrosse club exhibited all the facets of his arsenal during the opening weekend of the regular season. He provided provided the team with leadership leadership in both lopsided victories, victories, contributed at the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, and lived up to his reputation as being one of the toughest players in the league with a decisive victory in a spirited spirited and lengthy scrap in the home opener. "I'm known around the league as a guy not to mess with," said Hewak during a recent practice. "But even though the other coaches tell their players about me, some of the players will still come after me to try and prove their coaches wrong. If someone wants to try me, I'm not going to back down unless it's during a key time in the playoffs." It's this same element of toughness that Hcwak brought to the bluclinc of the Bowmanvillc Eagles Jr. A hockey club last season season after getting released from the Oshawa Lcgionaircs. In 24 games during the regular season, lie collected only one goal while racking up 181 minutes minutes in penalties.. Though his enthusiasm is a welcomed addition to any club, whether it be lacrosse or hockey, it has to be channelled in the right direction to be effective, effective, says Green Gaels' assistant coach, Dave Edgar. "Stefan has an abundance abundance of enthusiasm and energy, and an undying commitment to win," said Edgar during a recent practice. "If we have a problem with Stefan, it's trying to control his enthusiasm enthusiasm so that it happens at a more appropriate time." There is also another clement of Hcwak's game that doesn't get enough recognition. "He is one of the top three penalty killers in junior lacrosse in the country, country, whether it is Jr. A or Jr. B," said Edgar. "He can lift the team by scoring during a penally kill." Hcwak's first exposure to the sport was while watching a field lacrosse game that his brother was involved in. Soon after, at the age of seven, he ditched his soccer cleats for a pair of running shoes and a lacrosse stick. Along the way, he collected Ontario championships in pccwcc and midget while plying in the Whitby minor system. Even at age seven, it was the physical aspect of lacrosse that attracted him to the sport. "It's one of the best games to get your frustrations frustrations out," lie noted. "I enjoy the physical part, and it keeps' me in great shape." Right now, the game is keeping him on the sidelines. sidelines. A dislocated right knee suffered in the second second game of the season against Kahnawake will keep Hcwak out of the lineup for approximately four to six weeks. Although he vows to return to the lineup sooner than that. And when lie does, lie will be expected to assume the leadership responsibilities responsibilities lie inherited by being named one of the assistant captains. That role may be particularly important this year, as the Green Gaels are expected to waltz through the regular season without much of a challenge. challenge. "It means we're going to have to concentrate a lot harder," he said of the complacency that may creep into the dressing room as the season unfolds. "The regular season season is a time for us to work on our power play and penalty killing, and any I y'fc, -v.■... ;■ I r iiTvi Vi Union Oil Novices Win Division II W Title On Sunday, April 19, the Union Oil Novices completed their quest, capturing the Division II 'A' Championship title. "If we think every game is going to be a cakewalk, cakewalk, there will come a time in the third period when we are behind or the score is close and we'll end up losing." When his junior eligibility eligibility ends in three years, Hewak hopes to make the transition to the professional professional level. But before that happens, his intentions intentions are to add another Ontario championship to his collection, and ultimately, ultimately, a national title with the Green Gaels. If everything everything goes according to plan, lie would like to accomplish both of those feats this season.
