As the Lung Association launched its annual Asthma Appeal fund raising campaign campaign across Ontario recently, recently, it released findings that show Ontarians with asthma are limiting or giving up many of their activities, especially exercise and sports. The survey survey shows that asthma interiors interiors with sports activities, walking, exercising, dancing, dancing, climbing stairs, housework, housework, camping and outdoor yard work. Asthma is also setting limits on other activities such as going to a smoky bar or restaurant, contact with animals, contact with people wearing strong perfumes perfumes or scents and even going out in damp or cold weather. Focus Group studies conducted for The Lung Association last month indi cate many asthmatics must limit their social activities because they cannot spend time in restaurants, bars and other public places where smoking is still permitted. Most can't or shouldn't have pets such as dogs, cats and rabbits in their own homes and cannot visit friends who do. A number of focus group participants told how they had started exercise programs programs at various points in their lives but had to back down from them because the exercise would trigger •an asthma episode or would make their asthma worse. "Asthma sufferers must avoid triggers and that means many arc limiting their activities and compromising compromising their quality of life," says Dr. Paul O'Byrne, a rcspirologisl and Professor of Medicine who specializes specializes in exercise and asthma at McMaster University. The Angus Reid survey found 58% of respondents suffer from wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath daily or several times a week. A significant 36% wake several times a week or once or twice a month with asthma symptoms. An alarming 45% had visited a hospital emergency department department in the last week, month or year as a result of asthma.
