The Clarington/Courtice Independent. Bowmanvillc, Saturday, May 23,1998 Pace 9 Terry MacDonald-Cadieux Misses Out on Third Place by Inches Hampton Native Racing in Miami The beautiful Homestead Motor Complex near Miami, held Motorola's second race of the season. With temperatures temperatures in the 90's, TMC Motorsports raced their GM Goodwrcnch Service Plus/Snap-on Tools Pontiac to the closest third/fourth place finish. "The last few laps were quite exciting. We had been in third place for a while, but the fourth place car of Doug Goad was on the charge. Coming out of the last turn Goad pulled down low on the track and the two Pontiacs crossed the slart/finish line together. together. The TV people said we were third, the score board went from putting us third to fourth, back to third and then again to fourth", commented commented Terry MacDonald- Cadieux. MacDonald-Cadieux was just back from being in Brazil for a week; she was driving the PPG Pace Car during CART's race. Marty Miller, of California, would join the team as co-driver for this race and possibly team up with MacDonald-Cadieux for the remainder of the year. "We were a great team when we drove together in 1996. Marty is an excellent driver. He keeps the car in one piece and he is pretty quick," comments Terry. MacDonald-Cadieux would start and Miller would finish. On the first lap as the green flag flew, MacDonald-Cadieux shifted shifted gears, but missed third and found fifth instead. By turn one she had lost six or seven positions. "This really messes up your head. Now you have to drive perfectly to gain back your positions, plus make up more," stated Terry. And that is what the redhead did. She was turning turning lap speeds three seconds seconds faster than she had all weekend. In fact, had she qualified at that speed the team would have started in the top five. MacDonald- Cadieux made some really good passes into turns one and five. Thirty minutes into the two-hour race the car started started to get hot. MacDonald- Cadieux had to turn the heater on full blast. "It was getting so hot in the car my entire body started to tingle" tingle" commented Terry. As the water temperature started to cool down, she was able to slowly turn the heater off. Minutes before the halfway point the GM Goodwrcnch Service Plus/Snap-On Tools Pontiac pitted. Miller would bring it home. Terry had brought the Pontiac back up into tenth place as they pitted. Ed O'Brien, the team manager, manager, made a really great call. They were among the first to pit, so as other teams pitted, they would pick up positions. During the final twenty minutes they were in sixth position. Cars started hav ing problems and losing brakes. But this Pontiac was racing with Performance Friction brakes and having little to no problems. Even at the end, Marty still had brakes and could challenge other cars. With seven minutes to go they were sitting in third. The team was so excited. They were about to get their first podium finish as a new team. This would also make them the first Pontiac to cross the line, but the last lap brought much controversy. At the podium, they gave third to Goad/Powcll and gave this team fourth place. It was a matter of just three inches who would get third.
