> Read the Fine Print Consumer and Commercial Relations Minister David Tsubouchi is warning Ontario residents to be very careful about responding to any contest they haven't actually entered - whether it's a "seraleh-and-win" game card in the mail or a big prize from a telephone solicitor. "We always tell consumers that if they have truly won a prize, it should not cost them anything to collect it," the minister minister said. With any scratch-and-win contest or other offers of prizes, the ministry says: - If you call a 1-900 number, there is usually a charge. - It is highly unlikely you will win a prize when you have not entered a contest. - If an offer seems loo good to be true, it probably is. The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, May 30. 1998 Page 13 Spring Gardening Needs Good Planning This article is provided by local Realtors and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) for the benefit of consumers in the real estate market. If you're an avid gardener you probably know that spring gardening actually starts in winter. That's when you can sit back in the comfort comfort of a warm chair and decide what you want to plant and where come spring. Beautifying your yard can be very satisfying. It's also profitable. Well-placed trees, shrubs, flowering plants and an attractive lawn can increase the value of your property. That's why it pays to plan ahead. Draw a plan Begin by making a plan on graph paper of your outdoor outdoor planting areas. This will help you decide the number and type of plants - sun-loving sun-loving or shade-loving - that you'll need to achieve the look you want. Use one square of the graph paper to represent roughly one square fool of garden space. Draw beds, borders and gardens to scale and use colored colored felt pens to represent groups of plants. Keep in mind that most flowering plants arc placed about a foot apart. Count the squares within the colored areas to estimate the number of annuals annuals you'll need and the number number of perennials already in place. This is also the time to decide which plants you will grow from seed, if any and which you will purchase as ready-grown transplants. If you want continual color, from early spring to late fall, you may have to plant more than one kind of annual in a particular location. What grows where In deciding what plants to place where, you have to consider consider factors such as sun, shade, heat, reflected light, winds and soil condition. Most flowering annuals and perennials do best in full sun. All plants need some sun. When plants arc recommended recommended for shaded areas, this means they perform best in partially or lightly shaded places. In deep shade, almost any flowering plant will become stressed. Most plants don't enjoy begin overheated. Some don't mind the heat as long as their roots arc cool. Deeply dug soils are always cooler than shallow soils. Dry summer summer winds can also harm plants. A row of evergreen shrubs or trees is a far more effective barrier to winds than a solid wall or fence. Soil quality Flowering plants and vegetable vegetable gardens require good soil drainage. How well your garden soil drains depends on its composition. Clay soils tend to drain slowly while sandy ones drain rapidly. Both can be improved with Royal Canadian Mint Invites Canadians to "Create a Centsation!" In addition to its physical makeup, soil can also be classified classified as acid, alkaline or neutral. neutral. This is also referred to as its pH content. High acidity or high alkalinity can be harmful to plants. Materials such as lime can be added to decrease soil acidity. Soil or peat moss is added to decrease soil alkalinity. Acid soils are common in forested areas while alkaline soils predominate predominate in low-rainfall regions. To test the pH of your soil, you can purchase a GROUP do-it-yourself kit or send a sample to a laboratory that will test the soil for you. If you have to adjust your soil's pH, do it in the fall or in early spring as soon as the ground is dry and can be worked. Early spring is also a good time to prune trees and shrubs while they arc still dormant and to plant any new trees and shrubs you want to add to your yard. Digging Digging an established garden is fairly easy. As a general rule, garden soil should consist of about one- third organic matter. Apply three to six inches of peat EXCLUSIVELY FROM SUTTON moss or other organic material material over the existing soil. Then till or spade all materials thoroughly to a depth of eight to 12 inches. Digging a new plot is an entirely different matter, especially if the new area is covered with grass and weeds. The easiest method is lo stake out the site you want to dig. If the soil is dry, thoroughly moisten it the day before you plan to dig. Don't dig soil when it is wet or dry - try for that crumbly, in-between stage. Begin by removing squares of sod with a spade and shaking valuable topsoil from the roots. You can sin gle dig or double dig. Double digging is more work - you dig a trench in the soil to the depth of your spade, then dig down further with a garden fork to loosen the soil below. Plants with deep root systems respond belter to double dug soil. Planting If you arc planting seeds directly outdoors, make sure you don't place them too deep in the soil. Many seeds need exposure to light to germinate. germinate. If the plants don't tolerate tolerate frost well at the seedling stage, ensure that all danger of frost has passed. elïïï 15 fcAS» 6 FREE = INTEREST \ BAÇ"- INTEREST Call 697-1700 Your Neighbourhood Specialists 'Certain conditions apply THE LIST IS GROWING ... !
