The latest donation was $50,000 from the Bowmanville Rotary Club. The Clarington resident has won awards for everything everything from motorbike racing racing to wrestling, weightlifting and bowling. Three years ago, he got to thinking about all those trophies collecting dust in his attic and it occurred to him he could refurbish them and donate them as prizes for the CNIB's annual car rally. "I'll take one big trophy and take it apart and get four smaller trophies -Bud Lambert Lambert is the advisory board chair for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind here in Durham Region. He lost his sight after a car accident accident in 1984. A life-long mechanic, used to working with his hands, lie has never let his visual handicap keep him out of the workshop. And recycling trophies is something lie could do between fixing up classic cars. "I'll take one big trophy and take it apart and get four smaller trophies out of it," he says. So far, he's got 18 polished polished up and ready to hand out at the car rally barbecue barbecue coming up on June 13th. Besides the small "keepers," there arc four large trophies, and one that the Lions Clubs in the area compete for every year. Bud is glad to help out with this major fund-raiser for the CNIB. Local Programs Pledge money allows staff to to continue programs programs for the vision- impaired, such as: counselling, counselling, reading Braille, mobility sessions in home and around the neighborhood, neighborhood, technical aids, and career help. The CNIB office at 205 Bond Street East in Osliawa has seven staff, over 100 volunteers and delivers services to 1,300 clients. They get 20 new referrals each month. Local access to service was not always something to count on. Bud himself had to wait five months for a mobility instructor from Mississauga to visit his home. Only four years ago the Newest Catholic School Gets A Name The new elementary school now under construction in north Bowmanvillc will be called St. Elizabeth Catholic School. The name was approved on May 26th by the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board. It was selected from four short-listed suggestions. The runner-up names were Jean Vanicr, Holy Family and Our Lady of Peace. The school is scheduled to open this fall. onc-sccrctary satellite office here in Durham was on the verge of being closed down by CNIB head office. But volunteers, volunteers, many of them vision-impaired, stepped in and kept the place open. Their determination convinced the Ontario Division executive director director to halt closure plans and put up money for the rent, hydro and phone bill every month. Office manager Iris Milne says other offices around Ontario did close in 94. "But the volunteers here made such an impact that they didn't close this one." Now, she says, the service service is "close to ideal." To keep it up, though, they need successful fundraisers. fundraisers.
