Three main types of commissions are: (1) No-load - no commission fees are paid, however you become your own financial consultant (2) I'ront-end - a certain percentage of your investment is paio up front (3) Deferred sales charge (DSC) - investor pays no commission up front; DSC is a declining commission schedule based on the number of years the investor holds his investment (commission declines to 0% after 5 to 7 years) Service fees, also referred to as 'trailer fees', are paid quarterly, based upon the total assets held with a fund company. Each of the various fund companies rely on a large network of independent financial advisors and these individuals are compensated to provide a high level of service to every client. Management fees,, expressed as 'MERs' (Management Expense Ratios) are paid to the fund managers for day to day operations of their funds. Different types of mutual funds may have higher or lower MERs, dependent upon the type' of fund and how costly it is to manage (ie. International; Canadian; Emerging market funds). Any figures you see reported in the media have already taken the MER into consideration. The bottom line should not necessarily be a "commission" decision. Your decision should ultimately be based upon the advice, service and integrity of your, financial consultant. He/she ^should be assisting you in maintaining your commitment to your goals and most importantly assisting you in achieving your 'specific financial goals. ©J.P. REGAL CAPITAL PLANNERS LTD.
