The Bowmanvillc resident resident finished 11th overall after qualifying ninth on the starting grid in the 600 National Sport Bike race. The race, originally scheduled scheduled for 10 laps, was shortened shortened to eight due to unpredictable unpredictable weather conditions. conditions. It was shortened even further when a serious serious crash occurred on lap seven, forcing drivers to accept their results after only six laps. "I should have been in the top ten this weekend," said Orchard in looking back at his eleventh place performance. "I was capa ble of posting better times. "But, for a national race, we didn't have many laps." It was the first national event for Orchard in the series after climbing the ladder of success in the 250 GP and 125 GP classes. classes. Despite being a "rookie" "rookie" at this level, he was still hoping for a belter finish. finish. "From the times I was posting on the weekend and in the heat race, I should have been in the top five. "The competition is a lot stiffen and the racing is a lot better," he said of the move up in calibre. "There are more guys going faster and that pushes me to go faster." The fact that the race at Mosport was in his own backyard didn't give him much in the way of an advantage. "It was only the third time I've raced there, so it wasn't much of an advantage. advantage. But I'd love to race there more often." Road racing for the past 10 years, Orchard is following following in the footsteps of his parents, who were National Champions in sidecar racing. Each race still remains a family affair with his dad, Mike, serving serving as a technical manager, and his morn, Greta, serving serving as the registration and results administrator. Even his wife, Julie, works as a pit crew member. The National series shifts to Chilliwack, B.C. for round two (June 20- 21), and then on to Calgary, Alberta (June 26- 28). Rounds four and five will be in Quebec, with the series wrapping up Labour Day weekend in Shannonvillc. "I hope to be in the front row of the starting grid by the end of the year, and I'd like to be finish in the top five in points," says Orchard of his goals for the six-race national series.
