Drop-In Popular Spot For Courtice Teens by Lorraine Mdnfredo Staff Writer Last summer, if Lisa Fcldcamp wasn't parked in front of her TV she was probably hanging out at a local coffee shop. But these days, the kids in Courtice have found a new hangout. It's a place they feel tremendously welcome. Spending time in the building ; surrounded ^ by 50 friends ; and a floor : kill of games sure beats congregating ; on the streets And Lisa will tell you ; that spending time in this i building designed by i Frank Lloyd Wright, sur- j rounded by 50 friends and ; a floor full of games, sure ; beats congregating on the ; streets. ' The Courtice Teen Drop-In Centre at 1778 Nash Road is run by the Clarington Youth Council teens. Adults arc available to act in a consulting capacity, capacity, but they generally stand back and let the kids run the show. The facility has been open since September and draws anywhere from 30 to 50 kids on the two nights a week it's open. Teens aged 12 and up come from all over Courtice, Tyrone, Enniskillen, and even Oshawa. Faith United Church provides the space, which it is indeed a glamorous piece of architecture on a ten-acre lot lined with tall pines. The building was formerly an estate home built in the 60's by a local builder using plans Lloyd Wright originally created for his son-in-law. Chris Kreasul, 15-year- old council, co-chair,' Says' everyone, respects the place: "There"s been no vandalism." The Municipality of Clarington just announced a funding grant of $2,000. However the teens are taking taking on the responsibility for raising money for programs programs they want to put in place. It was a friendly showdown showdown between Courtice and Bowmanville area youth. There are also camping trips and community dances in the works. Vicky Tonery, one of the youth council executive executive members, is excited about a professional nail clinic she and co-chair Nicky Burns arc organizing. organizing. They've already got 25 girls interested. "I love the responsibility responsibility that comes along with this," says Vicky. If there is a down side to the drop-in centre, it's that it's only open Wednesday and Saturday evenings. "If we had more adults come forward as volun teers we'd be able to open more nights," says Bob Kreasul who along with Dave Hubbell acts as one of the adult supervisors. Volunteering for the role has been a joy, Kreasul says. "Basically the job is to stay out of the way. The kids are great." / X 'M m s'il' H-j# V- V<î J 'l-ii-T . >p .-,-.ri! jjwr'-Svi* xv-ri' ,• ! féig gl Ouch!
