Last year's scries of free outdoor summer concerts concerts in Bowmanvillc's Rotary Park was so successful successful that they're back this year for a whole new season. First Show Thursday Night Starting this Thursday night (June lltli) with a performance by the country country group Chaser, local music-lovers can take in an open air concert at the gazebo each week. The musical menu ranges from bagpipes to brass, with helpings of Celtic, vocal, honky-tonk piano and children's music too. Just bring along your cars, your lawn chair (and perhaps an umbrella) to enjoy the 7 p.m. shows. Brian Purdy, one of the three members of the concerts concerts in the park committee, committee, says crowds last year averaged 200 to 300. At times up to 400 look in the performances. And there's ample evidence evidence that the popularity of these summer concerts is growing to beat the band. "What tickled us so much is that each sponsor is back this year and that thrills us to no end," Purdy said. He recalls that the idea behind the concert followed followed the dedication of the Colville clock tower and the opening of the Rotary Park in 1996. Purdy, along with Garth Gilpin and Ron Hooper agreed that the beautiful new park needed to be a showcase for community events. So, the three volunteers volunteers organized a few trial concerts that summer and booked a full schedule schedule of 12 events last year. Although Brian Purdy, Ron Hooper and Garth Gilpin are active in Bowmanvillc's BIA, the concerts in the park are a separate project they launched on their own initiative. And, of course, it operates on a non-prof it basis. "Our focus is in creating creating as many different types of music for as many interests as possible," possible," Purdy explains. The concerts arc among the most popular in the area and organizers are pleased to sec some folks arriving early with picnic baskets to enjoy the park and get a front-row scat. After the shows, there is often an opportunity to meet the performers. Groups featured in the park concerts arc encouraged encouraged to bring along any tapes or CDs which arc available for sale to the audience. Originally formed in 1958, during the era known as the Fabulous 50s, this band reunited in 1993 with two of the original original members to again play the rock and roll music to which people love to listen and dance. The fiftics-stylc concert will be in keeping with the BIA's Fabulous Fifties celebration that takes place downtown June 18th to 20. June 25lh, Celtic Storm: This popular group from Newfoundland will bring a little of the East coast to Bowmanville. Their music includes tunes by Spirit of the West and Great Big Sea, mixed with a hearty brew of ' traditional step dancing dancing melodics, jigs and waltzes.
