This is thanks to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters lobbying lobbying the provincial government and residents allowing wild turkeys to be released on their properties. Emic CalandrcIIi of Niagara Falls, New York, was the keynote speaker on Sunday morning during a talk on wild turkey culture. And lie says it's the challenge of (lie hunt and the sounds of the wild turkey that keeps him on their trails. "It's the sound of the birds and spring is a great time to be in the woods," lie said. Spring is thd only time in Ontario when it is legal to hunt wild turkeys. CalandrcIIi says the thrill is definitely in the hunt. He says lie lias called about 1,000 birds for hunters. He noted "I look forward to the gobbling -- especially when they drum." One turkey he especially remembers took him nine days to hunt. "I hunted him for nine mornings and I finally got him on the last day of the season," CalandrcIIi said. He added with the different types of terrain in Ontario, where they can roost, it has been found that "turkeys act a little differently depending on the terrain." He is also one wild turkey enthusiast who believes in conservation of all natural resources and is passing on his beliefs to his young son, as his father did to him. "We (hunters) sink a lot of money into conservation. I support groups and organizations organizations at home and here," lie said. "I've been hunting since I was able to walk." Looking out at his son who was 'talking' to a tom and a hen situated in two large cages, CalandrcIIi noted, "I guess hunting (and conservation) arc in our blood."
