Page 6 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, June 13,1998 Smile For the Camera Motorcycle racer Mark Orchard took time out from his busy schedule on the weekend weekend to do an interview with Spcedvision that will be aired at a later date. The Bowmanvillc resident was competing in this past weekends Superbike Championship races that were held at Mosport Park. The races from Mosport are scheduled to be broadcast broadcast on Spcedvision on the following dates: Tuesday, June 23, at 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.; Sunday, June 28, at 1:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, June 30, at 3:00 p.m. Mason Windows 86'ers Pound Aurora by 9-1 Score It was somewhat of a frustrating start to the 1998 season for the Mason Windows S6'crs when the opposition failed to show in our first game. And in the second match, although both teams arrived, the game's official didn't. It was with some hesitation hesitation that the team loaded up and headed for Aurora. A strong beginning by the home side was neutralized by a disciplined Darlington defence. As the half proceeded, proceeded, the 86'crs used excellent team play to take a three goal lead. Aurora managed to score in the early moments of the second second half, but this only spurred the Mason Windows crew on as they would score six unanswered unanswered goals before the end of the game. Each member of the Darlington team turned in an .outstanding effort for the 9-1 win. An especially strong performance performance came from Ryan Fowler with five goals, with two goals each from Kyle Myschowda and Korey Brown. Our next match had the 86'crs travel to Thornhill where they would meet North Scarborough in the opening round of the CSL Cup. For the first time in memory, this Darlington team found itself having to play catch up. A goal by Ryan Fowler late in the first half tied the match at one each. North Scarborough added two quick goals midway midway through the second half, but at no time did the 86'crs give up. With time running down, Ryan Fowler would notch his seventh and eighth goals in the past two games to again pull the teams even at the end of the game. The next step of this game was to enter two halves of sudden death overtime. Darlington increased the pace of the match and could have easily easily won it with some luck. Shots by Devon Potter and Ryan Fowler found the crossbar. With less than two minutes remaining, North Scarborough, on one o their few ventures into the Darlington zone during the extra time, scored the winning winning goal by putting the ball beyond the outstretched outstretched reach of Steve Mills. With this loss the 86'crs were eliminated from CSL Cup action. But because of it we can turn our full attention attention to league play. The Darlington Under- 10B soccer team, sponsored by National Powerskating and Russ Major Plumbing, took the championship at the Pickering Invitational Soccer Tournament this past weekend. weekend. In the opening game against a strong Mississauga club, Luc Pither scored the only goal, giving Darlington the victory. After suffering defeat at the hands of the Oshawa Kicks in game two, Darlington came back strong to beat Wexford 2-0 in game three with single goals by Luc Pitcher and Greg Nemisz. Nemisz also scored in semi-final action giving Darlington a 1-0 victory, which eliminated Pickering from the championship round and advanced Darlington to the finals to face a confident Oshawa Kicks squad. The championship game was soccer at its finest. Goaltender Mike Hinz denied the Kicks a goal with several outstanding saves in a scoreless scoreless opening half. Darlington turned up the heat in the second second half, and after pressing the Oshawa zone, Jake Sharer drove a hard ball past the Underaqer Drafted By Oshawa Generals •The Oshawa Generals used their first round pick in the OHL Priority Draft held in Barrie last weekend to select underager Jonah Leroux, a 6' 1", 190 pound forward who played Jr. B with CharLan last season. But, in the final minutes, Oshawa was awarded a free kick which sailed high into the Darlington net tying the game. Two action-filled overtime overtime periods without a score brought the decision to a shootout which saw seven shots before Dan McCarthy broke the deadlock with the winning goal. Darlington continues unbeaten in regular season play with their latest 4-0 win over Oshawa Turul. Single goals by Kevin Bourke and Luck Pither, plus two goals from Greg Nemisz rounded out the scoring.
