The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanvillc. June 17. 1998 Pace 9 r Future Looks Bright for Retiring Principal a V by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Wriler Wally Pitt is packing in the pressures of being a school principal after 34 years. After his final farewell to colleagues at Dr. Emily Stowe Public School on June 30th he can look forward calling each day his own. No more manuals to memorize, no more committee work, no 'more headaches over staff scheduling, enrolment enrolment figures or kids whose actions land them in his office. "You know, I'm going to miss it - big time," he says. Start New Chapter Now that Mr. Pitt has achieved the magical "90 factor" (age plus years of service) Required by the school board, he figures the time is right to start a new chapter in his life. As yet, lie has no concrete plans, except contemplating a sideline career in personnel development. Years of accumulated knowledge of bringing out the best in teachers and administrations makes him something of an expert in the educational field. And what lie knows about teamwork in schools can be transferred to business or industry as well, he says. As principal, Mr. Pitt never hid in his office or lost sight of who the real "clients" were in the education system. He made a point to be visible and available to parents and pupils. He said the high points in his career were watching his students bloom. "When we sec a child who has struggled struggled suddenly demonstrate success, whether it be academic, emotional or social, those arc the times when we go home feeling the best." Pitt began his career fresh out of teachers college, taking a position as tcachcr/principal in 1964 at Mildred Cooke School in Trenton. He soon moved on to be principal at South Courticc for ten years, then Mitchell's Corners for seven years, Hampton Junior for five and a half years, and was in charge of the twin campuses of North and South Courticc for over a year. In 1989 he came to Dr. Emily Stowe Public School, the year it first opened. Wally Pitt lives in Bowmanvillc with his wife Nancy and their children Andrew and Ashley. He is conscious of leaving the Kawarlha Pine Ridge District School Board during a time of tremendous changes in education, namely school board amalgamations and major changes to classroom curriculum. "Change always seems frightening," he says "but it can also lead to exciting things for the future." He can't help but imagine that the future must be bright beyond all the change and recommends anyone coping with change read the book "Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers." SCHOOL'S OUT - Wally Pitt is definitely not facing an idle retirement when he leaves Dr. Emily Stowe Public School at the end of June. A fit and vibrant 56, the Bowmanvillc resident is considering a new career direction after 34 years in the school system, perhaps in the field of personnel development.
