Page 4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, June 17, 1998 Section Two Speedskating Club Meets The Claringlon Speedskating Club, which hopes to be in full operation this fall, is looking for some help. Anyone interested in joining the club as a skater, coach, or volunteer, is asked to attend a meeting on Wednesday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. at 234 King St. East, Bowmanville, or call 697- 2132. Generals Need Coaches The Oshawa Generals arc searching for two new assistant coaches to help behind the bench with head coach John Goodwin. Bryan Marchment tendered his resignation earlier, and now, the other assistant coach of last year's team, Brent Grieve, has done the same. He has left the team to pursue business interests outside of hockey. Blue Jay Reliever Can Be Everything but the Hero If Paul Quantrill Is doing his Job, Nobody Notices that he Pitched by Brad Kelly Staff Writer You get the sense that for the first time in his professional career, Paul Quantrill is content with his role on the Toronto Blue Jays. Sitting comfortably on a couch in the middle of the clubhouse prior to a game against the Baltimore Orioles last Friday, the hard throwing reliever is going over the options that exist with his role on the baseball club. It's simple, in fact. He can be everything but the hero. "My role is very defined: I can be the goat or get the out that our team needs. Most times, by the next day, everyone forgets that I pitched." Indeed that is the ease if he is doing his job. Get the out, and his appearance appearance is nothing more than a statistic in the morning paper. But give up a hit with the bases loaded and the game on the line in the later innings, and it's time to get properly fitted for the goat horns. Those are the terms a short reliever has to accept to be successful in the major leagues. And based on the numbers that Quantrill put up last year, and has continued to do again this year, he is slowly slowly becoming the master of his trade. 1 A season ago, .sent , to the bullpen on a full-time basis by manager Cito Gaston, Quantrill made 77 appearances, the most ever by a Canadian-born pitcher. He tied for fourth among American League relievers with a 1.94 ERA, and even recorded five saves during a time when the Blue Jays were using a rotating system in attempt to find a closer. But coming into a ball- game in the ninth inning to preserve a victory is a role that the Port Hope native isn't interested in on a full-time basis. "You might pitch five days in a row, and then not pitch for five days, yet have to come into a game and still be effective. I really don't think I could do that." His reputation is that of having a "rubber arm." Being able to pitch almost everyday, without sustaining sustaining any injuries or fatigue. It's a label that has followed followed him ever since being called up to the big leagues with the Boston Red Sox in 1992. It's a nice label, making him an attractive commodity to have on the pitching staff. At the same time, it can also be detrimental in trying trying to find a place on the team to fit in. "When I came into the league, I wasn't a starter or reliever, more of a jack of all trades," he said, adding the extra workload has little effect on him. "I don't think you are ever going to hurt my arm, and I love to pitch everyday." Often during a television television broadcast of a game, it's a common site to see Quantrill sitting beside veteran reliever Dan Plesac, holding an animated animated discussion. Most times it centres around baseball, and how to pitch certain players. The "bickering" as Quantrill put it, can ^continue into the clubhouse clubhouse as their lockers arc beside each othen» "We just listen to appease him because he's 70-years-old and we feel bad for him," Quantrill said, hoping that the quote would be overheard by the right person. In this ease Plesac, who is actually 36-years-old. In addition to playing for the Blue Jays and Red Sox, Quantrill also spent parts of two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, working both as a starter and reliever. So when the question of intcrlcaguc play comes up, the 29- ycar-old is well versed after playing in both leagues, and now being part of the exchange that was introduced to baseball baseball last year. From an historical perspective, perspective, he isn't in favour of intcrlcaguc play, opting instead to have the best teams in the American and National League meet in the World Series with everything on the line. But, he adds, the fans seem to like it, and that's what is most important. "If the fans like it, then I'm for it," he notes. The part that players are having a difficulty with is the extensive travel travel that is required as part of the schedule. For instance, the Blue Jays flew to Florida for a three game series last week, came home to face the Orioles for a three game weekend series, then fly back to Tampa Bay for a three game set at the start of this week. "The schedule is absolutely horrendous because of inter-league play," said Quantrill of having to fly to Florida on consecutive weeks to face two different teams. "It's hard for teams to play up to their ability because the travel is ridiculous. "We have to vote on whether to keep it for next year. If they can't make adjustments to the schedule, schedule, I think there will be a lot of guys who arc going to vote against it." And as for a preference between the two leagues? "I like the National League. It's more pure baseball with the strategy of hitting and running, bunting, and having the pitchers hit." [îhéQÛôntriW® ï^owmber 3,1968, ' n London, Ont.
