/ The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, June 17, 1998 Section Two Pace 9 Hoping to be Top Dog A competitor tries her best to impress judges at the Championship Dog Show and Obedience Trials held at Durham Central Fairgrounds in Orono on June 12,13, and 15. An estimated 1,500 dog owners from across the province registered their animals and the event attracted close to 6,000 spectators. This is the second year in a row that the Ontario County Kennel Club hosted the show in Orono. Dog Days of Summer at Show Ennsikillen News Churches Release Summer Schedules by Betty Wright The joint church picnic was held at C.L.O.C.A. on Sunday. There was a special special worship service with Reverend Norman Scli on his guitar and his Dad on. banjo. It was a pleasure to have Reverend Seli's parents parents join us. There was plenty of good food and lots of games and races for the children. There was an excellent crowd at the picnic. picnic. Decoration Day services services were held in Hampton on Sunday with a service at the church. Orono sure was a very busy spot this past weekend. weekend. Yard sales all over, a very large "dog show" in the fair grounds and an "Art Show" in the arena. The very large crowd for the dog show came in Friday evening and although thunderstorms threatened all weekend, a very successful event! Despite the tragic news this past few weeks, " a dog is man's best friend", when one secs the beautiful beautiful dogs arid their intelligence! intelligence! So many varieties and we noticed especially a very tiny little dog (his mistress in a wheelchair) never missed an order or command from the judge. The judges came from Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver and as far away as Florida! Held in Orono arena and a good show, all forms of art, oil, watercolours and even very artistic wood carvings. Talking to a former Orono resident Mr. Wayne Dcramo and were able to view his artistic artistic endeavours. In mentioning former residents, in Fridays (last) Obituary, we noted the passing of the former wife of .the Reverend Franklin Bannister from Bowmanvillc in Toronto, also in Toronto Mr. Charles Catto's passing (97 years) father of the Reverend Catto, former minister at Hampton. Sr. C.'s Meeting Held Thursday, June 11, in the I.O.O.F. hall. Following a short meeting, Orono News a new committee of two ladies, Mrs. Jim Allen and Mrs. Alice Hooey will be in charge of the October meeting. We have all really really appreciated the many years of fine leadership of our retiring president, Mrs. Encz Harris and she was presented with lovely flowers. Five Oaks, a retreat and learning centre that serves the five central conferences in Ontario is under threat of serious disturbance disturbance from noise, dust and traffic because of an application to open up a large gravel pit adjacent to the Five Oaks site. The directors of Five Oaks arc asking church members to protect this valuable asset by signing a petition to be sent to Brantford Township Council asking that the request to develop the gravel pit be refused. The petition is in the Orono Church entrance. Leaflets stating the United Church's opposition opposition to government promoted promoted gambling are available available in both church entrances. Shannon is a foster parent for dogs. She has had several several of them. One includes Shadow who she brought with her. She discussed her work with dogs and how she has to train them so they won't be hurt or even killed. She says that if you want to train your own dog you should use easy gentle commands. The minutes of the last meeting were shared and wc did roll call, which was "What is your pet's name?" Wc talked about Peterborough Judging Day and Durham Judging Day and the Durham Judging team that will consist of Jancllc Kellogg, Natalie Kellogg and Gillian Barrie.
