Warn children not to approach any dog they don't know, and even ones they do know, without without asking." Eleanor Laverty Oshawa "There arc no bad dogs, only bad owners. I've had dogs for 25 years and have yet to have a bite. People arc just not paying attention. You can never let down your guard." Joyce Rattray Port Perry "You have to caution your children not to approach strange dogs. And on the owner's side they have to keep control of their animals." animals." Preparations or education education or information is useful useful before a major project is undertaken, but if we wait until we have all of the i's dotted and the t's crossed or have learned every detail about every point of our route or have saturated our brain with all of the information available available we will be overwhelmed overwhelmed and exhausted before we even start. Learn enough, to stay out of trouble trouble and . be prepared to enjoy learning new things along the way. The joy is dealing with the unexpected unexpected and exploring the unknown. A major project such as riding a bike for over 10 months is to have control and determination. There were tough times, lonely times, times when the mountain seemed to grow taller as I cycled towards the summit. There were wet days, cold days, hot days and desert dry days when giving up would have been easy. It is at times such as You will come for the price ... and stay for the service! Wow, the most western point of the journey journey and already one-third done. Halfway? This is great. From here on I start to subtract subtract how many miles I have yet to go! Only 4,999! I've already done 5,000 miles! Is the glass half full or half empty? Nine thousand miles? Almost home! Surely another 1000 miles is not that difficult? Only 10% of the trip to go! Was it worth the effort? Absolutely! Money has been raised to allow deserving and qualified students to study for a year at North American Universities. That was the reason for the trip and even though more money is needed a foundation has been created which will allow the dream of two Haitian students to become a reality. I have seen first hand • the incredible diversity and beauty of the U.S. I have met wonderful, kind and generous people who will forever be my friends. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, June 17, 1998 Page 5 Canada Needs Tax Cut From page 4 eminent - but by banks. While governments (at least in name) return taxes to the people in the form of services, banks do not. This bankers' tax discriminates discriminates especially against the poor. Too poor to get credit or credit card, they nevertheless pay for it each time they put their cash on the sales counter. As there is no advantage advantage anymore to the use of cash, customers tend to use the credit card because it has the advantage of a delay of payment. This is exactly what our friendly bankers want. On every transaction they make a few per cent and even more when latc-paymcnt charges can be added. It's truly a banker's dream •come true, but it boosts the price of nearly every item sold in Canada by a few percentage points. Canadians must love their banks to allow them to do this. Any other possible explanations fail, except one: large political donations donations to the party in power. Canadians should demand a two-price system. system. Lower prices for cash, free from any charges for credit. The cost of credit should be born by those who like to flash their plastic card and not by the poor and the frugal. We like to believe that our society is kinder and gentler than that of our neighbours south of the border, but is it? In the GM Workers In Oshawa Off the Job Two car assembly plants in Oshawa remain idle on Tuesday due to an on-going work stoppage at the General Motors production facility in Flint, Michigan. Workers at Car Plant One in Oshawa were advised not to report for work on June 9th. About 1,900 are currently on layoff. On June 15th Another 2,500 employees at Plant 2 were notified the plant would suspend production production there. The only other GM plant affected by the U.S. work stoppage is the Components Plant in St. Catharines which employs 650 people. U.S.A., gas stations already have a two-price system. One for cash and one for credit! If we arc really kinder and gentler, we should prove it by going one step further and introduce a two-price system system for all merchandise. Here is an opportunity for all those leaders who always express concern about the poor and disad vantaged and those who demand lower taxes to stimulate the economy and the defenders of individual freedoms, to unite in a common cause against our banks before they become too powerful when they merge.
