June 20, 1998 Clarington East Food Bank The members of the Clarington East Food Bank chose their executive committee committee and directors on Wednesday night, June 17 during the annual general meeting at St. George's Anglican Church hall. They arc Wally Boughcn (director), (director), Debbie Fcltham (treasurer), Rev. David Chisling (director), Nancy Lavoie (director), Betty Adams (director), Karl Flicsser (director), Liz Murray (food bank coordinator), Cathie Moulton (director) and Charles Gray (chair). Absent from the photograph is Betty Stapleton (secretary). Last year the Clarington East Food Bank distributed $20,733 worth of food and groceries. Local residents arc reminded that the food bank has relocated to 87 Mill St N. in Newcastle. Currently the food bank needs rice, potatoes, crackers, canned pasta, shampoo, toothpaste, canned vegetables and extra-large disposable diapers. The food bank also requires more volunteers. Library Launches Program For "Eager Readers" Summer is almost here and you know what that means...It's time for the ever popular EAGER READERS' READERS' CLUB at the Clarington Public Library! This Club is for children in grades 1 to 3, who have learned the fundamentals of reading but need practice during during the summer. Each reader is paired with a student volunteer volunteer for one-on-one reading and other reading related activities. The Eager Readers' Club meets every Tuesday from July 7th to August 11th, at 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration begins June 16th at the Bowmanvillc Branch. Cruelty to Animals Conviction On May 29th, 1998 Mr. Harry Thorley of Cannington was convicted of Cruelty to Animals in Oshawa Criminal Court, Provincial Division. Mr. Thorley had neglected to provide adequate food for several Husky type dogs, which resulted in three dogs' being humanely destroyed due to their emaciated condition. Mr. Thorley entered a plea of guilty and was given 2 years probation and ordered not to possess any animals. He is also required as part of his probation probation to submit to regular inspections by Inspector Betty Van Setcrs of the Oshawa and District Humane Society of his premises to ensure compliance. compliance.
