Page 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, June 24,1998 Courtice Secondary School News After Three Decades Students Say Farewell by Corinne Hester A time of change is upon everyone. It is a time when some students may come to realize what a great teacher they really had in that grade nine or ten class so many years ago. Teaching is a hard job. It takes much skill and many years of care, compassion compassion and practice. This year Courtice Secondary School will be losing six teachers that have put their hearts and souls into their school. Former math teacher Don Adair is retiring after irs 30 year Mr. Don Adair is the veteran at Courtice. He has been teaching here for thirty-three thirty-three years; longer than anyone else. He started at Courtice in September of 1965 in the Math department. department. He taught in that department for twenty- seven years. Twenty of those years were spent as the assistant department head and four as department department head. After that he moved to the Co-op department where he has been for six years. The greatest thing to Mr. Adair about teaching is knowing that when a student learns something, he contributed to it. The worst thing is marking tests. He doesn't like to see students make mistakes they could have easily caught themselves. Mr. Adair is not just a teacher he is also a coach. Throughout his teaching career he has coached -fdtitball and volleyball. He still coaches our championship championship senior girls volleyball volleyball team. Ever since he was himself a student of math he has admired the structure of it. That is why he chose to become a math teacher. Mr. Harry McClurg, a teacher of 31 years, will retire with twenty years of Science and Physical Education and eleven years of Co-op under his belt. The best thing about teaching, to him, is the interaction with the students; students; seeing their success and watching them learn something about life. The thing he dislikes most is having to maintain the same level of discipline with a drastically changing society. Mr. McClurg became a teacher almost by accident. Since he wasn't wasn't happy in his current job, when he found out that Courtice was hiring, he applied. He got the job on the spot. He has never for one minute regretted it. Mr. McClurg has also coached many sports; football, football, basketball, volleyball and track and field. Mr. Dan Adams has been teaching at Courtice for 32 years. Before this, he taught for one year at Sturgeon Falls High School. Over the years lie has taught two or three Grade nine English units, History and Geography. His favourite thing about teaching is the thrill of explaining how things work. He likes it when the students think his lessons are "neat". Watching a graduating student cross the stage to get his diploma, diploma, makes him hopeful that maybe he was part of that success. But he doesn't doesn't like to see a student with no self discipline or one who has great potential potential and wastes it. In high school, he really liked both his Geography and History teachers. One day in class he said to himself, "I can do that". And he has for 33 years. Mr. Adams has also coached Track and Field and Golf. Mr. John Barrie has been teaching at Courtice Secondary for almost 29 years. In that time he has seen the name of the school board change four times. Mr. Barrie has taught all his teaching career in the Business department. He's taught classes such as Accounting, Marketing, Law, History, Business Math and even English. To Mr. Barrie the best thing about teaching is the interaction interaction with the kids. The other thing he likes is to watch his students grow in the learning process. The only thing that Mr. Barrie never liked was getting the blue on-call slips in his mail box some mornings. Although he has never coached any athletic teams, he is still considered considered a coach to some. He was in charge, of the checkers team, the founder of the first school newspaper. newspaper. He was also chairman of the board for Silent Reading. Mr. Dieter Wunderlich has been teaching for 32 years. On a year sabbatical he went to study the German education system; the other 31 were all at Courtice. Over the years Mr. Wunderlich has been the head of both the Physical Education and History department. He was head of Physical Education for twenty years and has been head of History for twelve. Mr. Wunderlich likes the look on his students' faces when they learn something new. He finds it hard to handle that in education, one doesn't always see the finished product. Mr. Wunderlich taught many sports: basketball, soccer, volleyball, football, track and field, handball, rugby and the sport he is most famous for, wrestling. Mr. Wunderlich is the one who made wrestling the big deal at Courtice. HEY KIDS! Win a ticket to the Garden Bros. Circus! McPherson & Associates 45 Liberty St. N., Bowmanvillc L1C 2L8 Phone 905-623-3252 Fax 905-623-4583 Mr. Gary Milovick has been the Principal at Courtice Secondary for nine years. Before that he has taught History at Queen Elizabeth Collegiate in Kingston and Bowmanvillc High School. He was the viceprincipal viceprincipal at Campbellford High School. In total, Mr. Milovick has been teaching teaching for 31 years. The best thing about teaching, to Mr. Milovick, is the contact contact with the students. As principal, his favorite thing is being in charge. The final decision is ultimately his. To him, the worst thing about being a teacher and a principal is the realization realization that everything is becoming very political. Teaching is no longer about the students. It's about money and government government power. He became a teacher when his future job as a historical researcher fell through. He applied for the teaching job and was hired on the spot. Mr. Milovick has coached football, wrestling, track and field and baseball. He led his baseball team to LOSSA for the first time. Among the six men, the most popular after-retirement after-retirement activities seem to be golf and travelling. Some will move to their cottages and some will only visit them. Mr. Adams wants to visit all the places he has taught about over the years. Some of the men would like to take interest courses such as computer and woodworking. Most of the men hope to volunteer volunteer either at the local or the township level. They advise future students students to remember the four F's - be fair, firm, friendly and flexible. Acquire a thick skin and be yourself. A teacher needs to understand understand where his students arc coming from. Teaching is not easy. If you think it is, don't get into it. If you like kids and are a people person, teach. Don't be swayed by all the political stuff. If you want to teach, teach, but be prepared to face the challenges that the occupation will face in the future. As the school year comes to a close, we say good bye to these educators educators and wish them well on their future endeavours. BSPS Junior Authors Students from Mrs. Ferguson's English class at Bowmanvillc Senior Public School wrote and illustrated their own children's story books. Among the chosen themes were: dealing with bullies, first day at school, and self- esteem. Matt Gross, Scott Schultz, Amanda Vos and Darryl Shaugncssy show off the books they wrote, edited, collated and bound. The Pines Senior Public School News by Stephanie Birkett and Kari Squire The Pines Senior Public School has had many important programs over the school year but one of the biggest is the Peer Helping Program. The Peer Helping Program is a program which helps future Peer Helpers learn how to deal with other students and their problems. Mrs. Gibson, who is the founder of the program, is retiring this year so Ms. Fortin will - - : r > r r f r \ t 1 / be taking over. Mrs. Gibson has done the program program for many years. The training for the Peer Helpers consists of a scries of activities which becomes a way of learning to deal with anything that might come their way. Some of the activities arc skits, watching videos, a trip and a final test at the end of the training to prepare prepare for next year. If a student is having a problem, they could go to a pair of peer helpers to help solve it. If they cannot come up with a solution then they will try and give some advice that might help and prevent the situation situation from occurring in the future. The students will later have a choice of speaking with the Peer Helpers in the future to discuss how they dealt with the situation. The Peer Helping Program has been very successful in the past and will serve as a great learning experience for the students in the future. Peer Helpers also assist with students who need organizational skills or help with assignments. The grade 8 graduation ceremony was held on Monday, June 22. Staff, students and parents alike arc eagerly awaiting the distribution of diplomas and special awards. The ceremony took place at Clarke High School and refreshments and a dance for the students was held at The Pines. Finally, we would like to wish a happy retirement to Mrs. Bert Gibson and Mrs. Zelda Armstrong. Their valuable contributions contributions to life at The Pines; will be truly missed.
