Page 12 The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, June 27, VJ98 Report from Queen's Park by John O'Toole Tax Increase is "Unacceptable" Recently, I was privileged to be the guest speaker at the graduation ceremony for'the Toronto School of Business, I was impressed with these determined mature graduates who have taken charge of their lives to prepare for their future. 1 recognized a number of my constituents as teachers and graduates. 1 commend the Toronto School of Business and the graduates for a beautiful beautiful evening. You could virtually virtually feel the confidence and optimism. This past week, 1 have had a number of calls questioning the recent newspaper articles suggesting a 20% tax increase. In my opinion, there is no taxpayer, including me, that accepts that we must have a tax increase. Like most of you, I already pay enough taxes. 1 don't necessarily expect my taxes to go down, but a 20% tax increase in Durham is completely unacceptable. I will repeat that the province has promised to keep the download revenue neutral. I know that our Regional Chair has met with Ministry of Finance officials and there is talk of assistance to make the transition. Furthermore, I am arranging a meeting with Mayor Moffalt and ministry staff to review Scugog numbers. numbers. 1 do recognize that the province has taken too much time to get the final assessment assessment numbers to the municipal municipal clerks and treasurers. However, if they don't have the final assessment numbers, how can they cry "tax increase." This past week, I attended the annual general meeting of the Bowmanvillc Memorial Hospital Board.'It was a very nostalgic meeting as this was the last meeting prior to the formation of the East Durham Hospital Board which will govern Oshawa General Hospital, North Durham, Whitby and Bowmanville. 1 tmly want to thank all the volunteer volunteer board members, as well as the hospital auxiliary and foundation for their selfless selfless hours of volunteerism. Hospitals are truly community community places. Each one of us has a story of a birth, an operation operation or a visit to the emergency; emergency; Nilrses Work tirelessly" : ori r weekends, eve'llings and" arc critical to the hospital care the very ill receive. With the expansion of home care services, services, many, nurses are changing changing career directions and for the most part you never hear them complain. 1 watched the Ministry of Health announcement of the $186.1 million for the delivery delivery of health in Toronto hospitals. hospitals. I am now waiting for the Ministry of Health announcements for our East Durham Hospitals. I am anxious anxious to see almost $100 million million for improvements like the long awaited cancer treatment treatment centre and expanded emergency and acute care facilities to serve the growth in Durham. Growth funding for the 905 area is expected, but we will have to wait and see the entire announcement. There docs not seem to be enough money to satisfy all our health care needs. This past week, Finance Minister Ernie Eves was in Ottawa to call on the Federal Finance Minister, Paul Martin to restore the funding to health care. All the provinces want the $6.8 billion that Ottawa has cut from the provinces between 1995 and CROSS CANADA MARKETPLACE PERSONALS LACK SELF-CONFIDENCE? Then buy, read and use "Dia- netics" by L. Our government has endured almost S3 billion in cuts, yet we have increased health care spending by over $1 billion dollars. Seldom do I speak on Federal political matters. However, as we approach Canada Day, 1 like to reflect on the national picture. Recently, the Federal Progressive Conservatives and the Reform Party have been in the news. The dynamics dynamics are changing, with Preston Manning courting the Quebec vote, Jean Charcst moving to the Quebec Liberals and the Conservatives seeking a new leader. One must reflect on former Prime Minster Joe Clark who authored the book, "A Nation Too Good To Lose" and is known for the phrase "Canada a community of communities". Also, Hugh Segal, who has been an advi- . sor to Premiers and Prime Ministers, in his book, "The Happy Warrior", lie chronicled chronicled his time in the halls of decision. As we examine the Federal Government, I long for a true alternative. It was once said that a government is only as good as its opposition. I would not be surprised to sec a more open challenge for the Liberal leadership in the next year - Alan Rock, Paul Martin, perhaps Brian Tobin or Sheila Copps. Who knows? A day is a lifetime in politics. What Canada really needs is a truly national leader with a clearly articulated articulated vision for all of Canada. With a balanced budget, Canada has choices, start paying off our children's future debt, lower taxes for the average hard working Canadian or expand spending programs. Some politicians will make the tough choices for the greater good for the greater number. Bowmanville Native Publishes Book of Poems IN PRINT -- At age 83, Cobourg resident Jack Allin published his first book of poetry poetry entitled "Between You, Me and The Gatepost."
