I u I The Claringlon/Couriice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, June 27,1998 Page 17 Letter to the Editor Optimists Can't Hold Fireworks in Newcastle Dear Editor: The Optimist Club of Newcastle Village regrets to announce that we will be unable to hold our Canada Day Cclcbration/Fireworks this year. This event has grown New Election Rules Give Tories More Money NDP Leader Says If the Harris government's government's new rules on election election spending go ahead, the Conservative's big- money backers will become the single most important factor in determining determining who wins Ontario elections. Under the Harris government's government's new rules, the Conservative Party of Ontario will be able to use their donations from big- money contributors to double the amount of cash spent each and every day on their election campaign. campaign. With help from their big-money backers, the Harris Conservatives will be able to bombard voters with an intense television ad campaign. Under the new election rules, the Conservatives will be able to double their daily campaign campaign spending, from $72,000 to $143,000. And even though the minimum election period is shortened shortened from 37 days to 28 days, the Tories, with their big-money backers, can spend $1.3 million more than before. Only the Tories and their corporate ' friends have that kind of money, so they're the ones who will be able to take advantage of these changes. Contrary to .what, the . minister would have us believe, neither of these two items were recommended recommended by the election finances commission. • In addition to the $1.3 million increase in spending, spending, the Conservatives are allowing corporations to nearly double the amount of money they can donate, while more than doubling the amount corporations can deduct from their taxes for political contributions. contributions. That means your taxes get to subsidize corporate corporate donors who want their agenda pushed by the Harris Conservatives. Voters in Ontario are not asking for these changes. Voters are demanding more nurses and, better emergency care in our hospitals. They want schools to have the tools they need to give their children a quality education. They want healthy communities for themselves and their families, families, They want a government government that listens. They don't want the Conservative Party of Ontario to rig the election process. These new rules were not made democratically. No government has ever unilaterally changed the election spending rules without the consent of the other parties. Unfortunately, because of the Harris government's changes to the rules of the Ontario Legislature, these rule, changes could become law within two weeks before the public has the opportunity to review and comment on the bill. It doesn't have to be this way, New Democrats are committed to making democracy work in Ontario, That means New Democrats will revoke the Harris Conservatives' undemocratic changes to the rules of the Legislature. New Democrats will ensure significant significant minimum time for debate and consultation on major new legislation. And Nc.w Democrats will guarantee guarantee public hearings with adequate notice on major initiatives. You want more democracy, democracy, The Tories don't. New Democrats offer the only real alternative, beyond the financial ability ability of our club. The event has always been well attended and it may seem to many who attend that it is a huge success, and in a feeling of community gathering and celebration this is so, unfortunately from a financial aspect the day is now operating at a loss. The cost has increased to the point where we can no longer afford to absorb it without impacting on many of the youth programs programs we provide and support support in the community. The public may not realize that, as a service club, our only source of income is through donations donations and fund-raising events (with all funds being put back into the community). Many people have been very generous in the past in assisting us with raising the funds. The fireworks alone cost $10,000.00 (ten thousand thousand dollars). The time, effort and people it takes for the one day event is astounding. We begin planning before Christmas. A worst case scenario for this event would be to break even, unfortunately we suffered a loss of $2,000.00 from the 1997 Canada Day Cclcbrations/Fireworks. We could not afford another another loss this year. We have enjoyed the events of the past but all things must change. Our concept was to provide a day of celebration of our country and community together that was open to every person. This is why we never charged an admission, it was always on a donation basis and we do not wish to change this, just to con- tinuc the day, for then the reason behind it would be forgotten. We will still be providing providing FREE SWIMMING at Newcastle Lion's Pool AND at Orono Park on July 1 this year.
