The Claringum/Cminicc Independent. Bowmanvillc, Saturday, June 27, 1998 Page? MAKING ROOM -- Mike Hickson (front) and John Bastas were moving displays in the automotive section of Bowmanvillc's Canadian Tire store recently to prepare for the renovations and expansion that is now in progress. The automotive department will be the first section of the store to face renovations. When the work is completed, the building's size will almost double. It will offer 48,000 products. That's up from the present 34,000. The renovations will be finished by March of next year. Michael Buff Re-elected GTAA Chairman Michael A. Bun of Toronto will once again chair the Board of Directors of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) as it heads into a year that will be highlighted by the start of construction on the Terminal Development Project at Lester B. Pearson International Airport. The GTAA just concluded concluded a record-setting first full year of operation with Mr. Butt as Chairman of the Board and he was re-elected for another term in office during a board meeting on Wednesday, June 10th, 1998. "I enjoyed my first year as Chairman and I am priv- ilcdgcd to be back for a second second term," said Mr. Butt. "The coming year is going to be an exciting one and I'm looking forward to working with the other Board members members as the Authority begins the foundation work for the new terminal at Pearson." Mr. Butt, who holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Toronto, is President of Buttcon Ltd., Chairman of the Ontario General Contractors' Association and is first national Vice- President of the Canadian Construction Association. An original member of the GTAA 15-mcmber Board of Directors which was formed in 1993, Mr. Butt is one of two nominees from the Regional Municipality of York on the Board. The regions of Durham, Halton and Peel, the City of Toronto, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada arc also represented on the Board which includes members members to reflect the interests of the business community, labour and consumers. Pearson currently ranks as the 25th busiest airport in the world and is one of the region's most important economic economic engines. The GTAA's first year was highlighted by the announcement of a $3.5 billion redevelopment program program that will revitalize and strengthen Pearson as one of North America's most important gateways. Challenge of Bill 160 The hearing into the legal challenge of the Education Quality Improvement Act (Bill 160) by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) is to begin June 17 in Toronto before Justice Peter Cumming. ÔECTA contends that Bill 160 contravenes the Constitution Act of 1867 which guarantees Roman Catholics the right to exclusive management and control of separate schools. The right of separate schools to tax their supporters has been consistently consistently upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada as part of their fundamental rights protected under s.93(l) of the Constitution Act. In taking away the right of separate school boards to tax and govern, the government has enabled non-Catholic majority interests to influence and control the internal decision-making processes of the Roman Catholic school system. OECTA is also challenging the parts of Bill 160 which: • permit the setting of tax rates behind closed doors at Queen's Park. • attempt to deny access to the courts to those who object to actions taken by the education minister. • give the minister the authority to take over complete control control of a school board if it is fell that the board is in financial difficulty.
