Over the past few weeks, I have repeatedly mentioned the intentions of the province to introduce introduce the Greater Toronto Services Board, (GTSB) legislation. First reading occurred this past week and the legislation will be available for the public to review. Second reading will likely come up in late September when the legislature legislature returns. After second second reading and debate, formal public consultations consultations will be held. The legislation legislation proposes that the GTSB may prepare strategics strategics with respect to the provision and optimal use of infrastructure. It would also manage GO transit through an authority known as GT Transit; help coordinate economic development and tourism in the GTA and assist with the resolution of interregional interregional disputes. It will also provide a forum for municipalities to discuss the administration and costs of social service assistance and social housing housing programs in the GTA. It is important to realize that GO Transit was once subsidized by all Ontario's taxpayers when in fact it primarily serves people in the GTA. Today, there already exists a committee of GTA Mayors and Regional Chairs to discuss many of the same issues that are being proposed. Representation and taxation taxation or levying powers are important components of this proposed GTSB. Every municipality will have representation and the weighted assessment of each municipality would determine their share of the tax burden. I am clearly on record as encouraging those ' municipalities','in my riding riding to u examine their options for the future. The question is, do we want to be part of the GTA or do we want to go it alone with the formation of a new form of county or upper tier , government like Victoria or Northumberland Counties. I have argued that rural municipalities find it difficult difficult to share in the funding of GO Transit or other services services they don't use. Over the summer and in the fall, I will be meeting with the Mayors and would like to see a public forum on this legislation. Call for more information. Hospitals in the GTA have received the announcement of $235.8 million in capital plus $59 million in new specialized services as well as some $19 million to address the operational growth funding. funding. For East Durham Hospitals (Port Perry, Uxbridge, Bowmanville, Whitby and Oshawa) this means $43.8 million for new emergency and ambulatory ambulatory care, critical care beds, operating rooms, complex continuing care and mental health beds and in addition, almost $20 million for a cancer treatment centre at Oshawa. Our share of the operational growth funding funding will be determined shortly. I have spoken with members of our boards and they responded positively positively to the news.
