For the past ' two years, volunteers have been . busy clearing out overgrown sections of the yard, pruning shrubs, reviving neglected flowers and u . trees, and in general bringing out the former beau- "" ty of the once famous garden. "We are trying to keep to the theme of the origi- - nal garden as much as possible," says volunteer Dianne McKenzie who is spearheading the project. Museum curator Charles Taws says the Jury - family who lived in the home between 1900 and 1960 made their own improvements to the attrac- ■ tive landscaping already established by previous occupant Mr. David Fisher, who was an enthusias- tic horticulturalist. The Jurys introduced more exotic plants, rows of . arbors and even a goldfish pond that was heated from the house so fish would stay in it all winter. r Today, the garden is more than just a backdrop for the historic old residence at the corner of Silver and Wellington Streets. It provides a parklike set- v ting for Canada Day picnics, children's activities, antique car shows and afternoon teas. , "We are striving to have the museum be a more . family oriented place," says Ms McKenzie. The grounds are essential to that. ; New to the grounds is a Memorial Garden in ; honor of a popular tour guide Tom Webb who died in January at age 76 after 11 years service to the ' museum. "I didn't have an opportunity to say goodbye," . says Dianne. She misses Webb's humor, his storytelling, storytelling, his impassioned political opinions. In March she had the idea to create a garden in his memory as living tribute. r She and several other volunteers put in a bird- bath and a small bench, they planted black-eyed susans, lilies, chrysanthemums, dalmatian bell ' flowers, phlox, and john's blue geraniums. "We - included flowers that could have been from generations generations ago, old time flowers." . - The memorial has been informally dubbed "the friendship garden." A dedication ceremony-is planned for July, 8 th.at ; .,11:30 a.m. (rain or shine) and at that time there will be two plaques unveiled to commemorate the late Mr. Webb. One will simply say Welcome, because . it was was part of his job to greet visitors. The Bowmanville Museum is very fortunate to have the support of so many willing hands and 11 sponsors, says Ms McKenzie. She is grateful to the many individuals who pitched in time, materials and advice. ! Like all gardens, this one is always evolving. ; Plans are to extend the circular brick walkway from the Silver Street side, around the north east corner of the building to lead people to the back .* garden area. Volunteers are also planning to restore j an original arbor that's in need of some repair and 1 clear more of the overgrown sections. Official Opening for Older Adults Centre Tickets to the September 19 opening of the Claringlon Older Adults Centre will go on sale July 9. The first ticket will be sold to Mayor Diane Hamrc. She will be present at the building site on Beech Avc„ Bowmanvillc, on Thursday, July 9 at 11:30. A half-day program is planned for the September opening ceremonies, beginning with square dancing and ending with a dinner. Tickets arc $50.00 a plate.
