Newcastle News Author Visits Historic Massey Buildings by Hazel Crago On Thursday of last week, Jack Gordon had two visitors from England - Malcolm Robinson, a collector collector of early Masscy- Harris tractors and John Farnworth, an agriculturist and also a collector of Massey memorabilia. John is the author of two volumes volumes titled Massey Legacy, published in 1997 to celebrate celebrate the 150th Massey Anniversary. After visiting the Gordon home, Jack was delighted to take the gentlemen gentlemen on a tour of Newcastle, beginning with a visit through the Community Hall, a gift to the village of Newcastle by Chester Massey in 1923. Next stop was the old Massey factory site on King Street East. At the Newcastle United Church where Jack next took his visitors, they probably learned that Charles, Chester's brother, was the first organist when the new brick Methodist Church opened in 1867. At that time the pipe organ was in the balcony against the tower. Now in July 1998 the pipe organ has been replaced by an Allen digital organ. The church parsonage, a gift from the Masseys in 1909, was pointed out. Now a private home, Daniel Massey's house was admired. This' was the former former St. George's Anglican Church rectory. A stop was made on Church Street to take photos photos of the early Methodist Manse, built by Hart Massey in 1859. This also is now a private dwelling. The tour ended by visiting visiting Daniel Massey's tombstone. tombstone. • Daniel was the founder of the Massey Company in 1847.
