Youth Centre Seeks Volunteers The Clarington Youth Centre is looking for both young people and adults to volunteer their services this summer. A one-day training session will be scheduled soon for the youth volunteers. It's open to persons aged 16 to 21 and will cover topics such as crisis intervention training, youth centre policy and procedures and daily operational procedures," procedures," said co-ordinator Dianna Eastwood. Those interested in volunteering their time are invited to call 623-6796. A sparate volunteer training program will be scheduled for adults from ages 22 and up. Eastwood says the role of the youth volunteers is to assist with organizing the pool tables and other games, monitor the stereo equipment and be responsible for the setup setup or clean-up of the centre. The main role of the adults is to help the younger volunteers to play the primary role in managing the centre. Youths who arc accepted as volunteers will also receive first aid training from St. John Ambulance. The Youth Centre, located in the former fire station on Church St., has been offering programs for young people on weekends and Wednesday evenings. The facility will be referred to in the future as The Firehouse Youth Centre. "Unnatural Landscape" Opens July 16 "Unnatural Landscape" is the title of an exhibition by Catherine Gibbon opening July 16th at the Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville. The show by the Dundas artist and environmentalist is a record of the Hagersville tire fire. The opening reception is from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, July 16, with the exhibition continuing continuing until August 14th. The artist's statement gives the following insights into the exhibition. "At 2 a.m. on February 10, 1990, Buck Slote's telephone rang. As the Fire Chief of the Hagersville Fire Department he was used to this type of call. But this was a call he had been dreading. As he drove away from the lights of the town, and headed out into the _dark rural landscape, his worst fears were confirmed. Ahead of him, over the dark horizon of the frozen fields an eerie red glow filled the night sky. He headed for the light. The Hagersville Tire Fire burned for seventeen days. Entitled "Bowmanville: Then and Now", it utilizes both old and new photographs to illustrate the fascinating history of Clarington's largest town. The old photos were taken from the Garfield Shaw Collection, Their selection and the new photographs were done by Clayton Morgan.
