Heavier Workload for Teachers May Halt High School Programs A heavier workload for high school teachers could put an end to extra-curricular programs such as inter- school sports, bands and choirs, and drama productions productions this fall. Dave Nickle, President of District 14 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, says individual teachers will have to make up their minds over participation in these programs. "What a number of individual individual teachers have said is if teachers are teaching an extra class in September, their priority priority is going to have to be the classroom. He adds they won't have the stamina to also volunteer in sports, music and drama as well as make time for their duties to their families and the community. community. "It's not been a spiteful thing. It's a question of mental mental sanity and physical stamina," stamina," Nickle said. He points out that the extra 75 minute class added to the teachers' workload will mean two hours of additional work in preparation, marking and consultation with students students and parents. A work stoppage at a Flint, Mich, plant has had production in some Oshawa GM plants at a virtual stop since early June. Oshawa's Car Assembly Plants 1 and 2, as well as the South Stamping Plant and the Delphi Chasis facility, have been affected so far. GM spokesperson Greg Gibson says the Oshawa truck plant would still be able to operate today, but that GM would "take it a day at a time." Second quarter financial financial statements released Tuesday indicated the strike has cost GM $1.2 billion US so far. An end to the US strike will not mean an immediate immediate return to work for local workers. Gibson says GM has "a plan that will show each one (plant) coming up in sequence" over a number of days following a settlement in Flint. in the process of working out a new contract with the school board, with a meeting for conciliation taking place on July 17th. The current collective agreement between teachers and the board of education expires on August 31. "We're hoping our board decides to be an agent for our kids and not an agent for the provincial government," he said.
