As usual, Zeddy's came out strong, with Candace Allen sending Mandi Buma down the wing to unleash a hard shot. Merissa Patington, our goalie, was tested early and often, but turned aside all shots. Zeddy's got a free kick and Kathleen Moore blasted one that the West Rouge goalie barely tipped over the net. Katie Gardener, had a great game on defense, constantly constantly breaking up the visitor's visitor's attack. Early Lead Kourtney Penfound sent Mandi Buma down the wing where she turned the ball inside to Candace Allen who calmly hammered the ball into the corner of the net while on a dead run. 1-0 for Zeddy's! Emily Bound had a strong game on the wing, turning the ball into the middle middle at every chance. Early in the second half, Christina Ellul was sent in on a breakaway by Candace Allen and drove a bullet past the helpless goalie. The fans went wild! Was a win possible? possible? Katie Turvill had a drive deflected just wide on net and Christina was thwarted on another breakaway. Amanda Leonard was strong in the midfield, never giving the West Rouge players much space. The only inconvenience the change in date presents is having to reopen the Fitness Centre pool for one day. Each year the pool closes from late August until after Labour Day weekend in September. But this year, an exception will be made for one day to accommodate accommodate the race. A change in venue to host the race at the new facility in Courticc was discussed, but because of the high volume of traffic on Courticc Road, the idea was nixed. With everything in place, the only concern is securing enough volunteers volunteers for race day. Help is needed in such areas as registration, lap counters, timers, water stations, and course clean-up. "Our biggest concern is to get the volunteers in place," said Leonard, who estimates about 70 people would help make. everything everything go smoothly. Registration forms for racers must be postmarked postmarked no later than Friday, August 21. Forms arc available at the Fitness Centre adjacent Bowmanvillc High School, or the Courticc Community Complex. For more information about the race or volunteering, contact Tracey Leonard at 623-3379 ext. 261. 1 0 The Minor Pccwcc Orioles beat Peterborough and Pickering in recent games. Your Feet are "Gateways" to Your Knees, Hips and Back QUESTION: Telma, I am starting to get the idea that I should come and see you if I have flat feet and let you examine my feet. I have enjoyed three articles on flat feet. How do you mean that flat feet can cause a problem in my knees, my hips and my back? I do not quite understand understand that. Put down the newspaper newspaper and stand UP. Take your left foot, roll the arch fn and keep it rolled. Now walk. Right away you'll feel a pull in your leg, either in your knee, hips or in your back. This is an example of how a. flat foot affects your walk, and how your walk will, in turn, affect other areas of your body. A person person with flat feet is actually walking on his/her arches. Multiply this little demonstration demonstration by the number of steps a person will take in life, and the picture for complications from flat feet becomes very clear. Everybody rolls in on their arches when they walk, but it's only for an instant and only to transmit the weight from our heels to our toes for the push-off. Walking normally, the heel will strike and then we roll through the mid-foot, it flattens flattens for an instant, but then when we push off again we should be pushing pushing off with the toes. But a flat foot will cause the walker to push off the flattened arch. A strain on the knee results because the motion pulls on the knee. If left uncorrected, the muscles running from the knee to the hip are affected. Now hip pain will surface. If left uncorrected the pain will spread to the *>ack and the body will try to compensate. Depending on the "solution" the body tries, neck pain and headaches headaches could be just around the corner. Another possibility possibility is that a flat foot will predispose the sufferer to heel and foot problems and we talked about that in the last article. Through writing about this condition, I hope I have made my readers more aware of the dangers of leaving it untreated. We learned that children can be helped and the good news is that physiotherapy will also help-adults. Where the foot is flattened flattened because the person is actually walking on their inside arch, but the arch remains in good condition, orthotics are critical to support support that arch and stop it from flattening any further. I do, however, suggest physiotherapy as a treatment treatment before jumping into orthotics. Why? Orthotics will not correct the muscular imbalance that has caused the flat foot. The physiotherapist physiotherapist will examine the foot, your knees and your back and will emphasize muscles that help to stabilize stabilize or correct the flatness of the foot. One of the most important sets of muscles in this case is the PELVIC, the HIP, the BACK and the ABDOMINAL muscles. By training those muscles to be a little stronger, we can help support the hips, the back, the knees and ultimately the flat foot. The numbers are promising: in 80% of cases treatment will correct the problem. Jana Cryderman controlled the play in the midfield. Countdown As the minutes counted down, Merissa was called upon to make a series of superb saves.
