The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, July 22, 1998 Patte 3 Everything's Coming Up Daylilies in Orono Public Open House This Weekend by Jennifer Stone Staff Writer What started as a hobby in a small backyard in Toronto has turned into a business and a passion for Orono daylily growers Douglas Lycclt and Henry Lorrain, owners of We're In The Haylicld Now Daylily Gardens. "We were living in Toronto, jn Rivcrdalc, in 1980. We had a little narrow narrow backyard, 15 feet wide, and I knew how to design an area in order to make it of interest. I went to a nursery with a friend ... she said to buy some daylilies ...and I said, what's a daylily?" remembered remembered Lycctt. After following his friend's advice, Lycctt "fell in love" with the plant. In 1986, after losing his mother, Lycctt decided to get away by visiting a family that raises daylilies in Gainesville, Fla. That turned into an annual pilgrimage pilgrimage that Lorrain soon joined. It turned out the gentleman they were visiting visiting was a renowned daylily grower. "We really learned from the master. I think if I had known really who he was ... I might have been a little loo intimidated to call him up. It changed my life, going there," Lycctt said. Lorrain and Lycett originally originally moved to their property property in Orono to raise racehorses racehorses but they "ended up with this dream soil," said Lycctt. They soon began hybridizing varieties of their own, and the gardens made the transition from hobby to business "the year we had to put in a very expensive irrigation system," laughed Lycctt. Last year, they introduced about 32 new varieties of daylilies. Since they began, they have introduced introduced about 80 different kinds of the plant. "We have new plants coming on line all the time. It's like a pipeline. From the time something first blooms to the time we have 30 to 70 of them for sale is another six years ... there's always change coming," said Lorrain. Their daylilies are now marketed through a catalogue. catalogue. The flowers arc available in a variety of price ranges, since Lycclt and Lorrain want them to be accessible to a broad cross-section of people. Blooms from the Orono farm can be found in every Canadian province but Newfoundland, and the ,■& i|i <si two have even shipped plants as far afield as Slovenia. Just recently, they had an inquiry from Moscow. The two have also put together a video, with help from John Thomson of Apogee Production in Orono. The video was filmed between February, 1997 and January, 1998 and shows people how to cross-breed and care for daylilies. "We want people to hybridize. We don't want to be the only people in Canada doing this. It's easy to do; it's rewarding; it's exciting," said Lorrain. We're In The Haylield Now Daylily Gardens will be open to the public this weekend, July 25 and 26, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It's the annual Open Garden, and the lilies will be in full bloom. The gar dens arc located just off the 5th Concession on Pollard Road in Orono. The video will be available, and the author of a book called "Daylilies" featuring We're In The Bayfield • Now, Norman Track, will be there to autograph his book. Also, refreshments and food will be available, as will folk art birdhouses by Kristin McCrea, and exotic brands of hosta from Jack Kent's Potting Shed in Cayuga. The public will also be able to purchase daylilies, and tour the beautiful gardens. gardens. Though the gardens have made the transition from hobby to business, Lycett said it's still very enjoyable for him. "I don't want it to become such a tremendous amount of work that it loses the joy," he said. IN THE HAYFIELD -- Henry Lorrain (left) and Gardens this weekend.
