Bagg says local farmers have completed the first cut of hay, and in some cases, the second cut is done. So far, according to Bagg, that crop seems to be of "good quality" Corn has also joined other vegetables in being ahead of its time, though Phyllis Price of Price's Country Market in Bowmanvillc, says this season has been "more work than usual." The Price farm hasn't received a great deal of rain. As a result, Price says they've "had to do a lot of irrigating." "If the corn doesn't have water when the cob is forming, it doesn't form it," she explains. But so far, "people arc certainly enjoying the corn," she says, adding that they've been particularly lucky in terms of the lack of insects this year. The cycle of the corn car worm and the corn borer doesn't start until August. "So, maybe the bugs are on schedule," she says, even though the corn is ahead of them. Though Bagg cautions that earlier this season there was some hail damage that may affect some apple growers, Stevens believes this fall's crop of apples at his orchard will be excellent. "The quality of the trees and the size of the apples arc wonderful," says Stevens, adding, "So far, Mother Nature hasn't treated us too badly." Q3 J f» cnolo d3ZB/.1?0 - Xnnnn ? ■ 0 Merchants Warned to Beware of Counterfeits In the past month and a half Durham Region Police have received approximately 100 reports involving counterfeit money. Most of the incidents involve counterfeit $100 and $50 bills and to a lesser lesser extent $20 bills and they have been passed predominantly predominantly along the Hwy. 401 corridor. Criminals usually target businesses such as donut shops, convenience stores, gas stations and fast food restaurants - anywhere an item with a small price tag can be purchased and the criminal then receives a large quantity of change in real money. There are a number of features that identify a bill as counterfeit: • On real bills, of the denomination of twenty and greater, the optical security device (OSD- commonly known as a hologram) is an excellent security feature. The OSD is located on the face of the bill in the top left corner. The OSD on a real bill will change, colour from green to gold when moved or rotated. On the counterfeit bill the ODS facsimile will stay the same colour-usu- ally a dull or shiny gold. • The paper used to produce produce counterfeit money is of poorer quality. It often feels different to the touch than real money. • Real money has small blue dots called planchettes, which appear randomly throughout the bill. On a real bill these planchettes can be picked off or out of the paper without ripping the bill. On the counterfeit bill the paper will rip when an attempt is made to remove Hints for Spotting Phoney Bills a planchette. • A counterfeit bill when compared to a real bill will be of poorer quality. quality. Most people will never receive a counterfeit bill and counterfeit money would make up only a small fraction of money in circulation although, as mentioned, merchants would be obvious targets. Police would like to warn citizens that it is a criminal offence to dupli cate money, to pass counterfeit counterfeit money or have it in your possession. Counterfeiting is an indictable offence punishable punishable by not more than 14 years in jail and all the equipment used in its pro duction, including computer computer equipment would be confiscated. Police arc asking that anyone with information regarding counterfeit money contact the Durham Regional Police at (905) 579-1520 ext. 5257 or Crime Stoppers at (905) 436-TIPS.
