The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, July 29, 1998 Section Two Page 5 Lily Show Attracts Large Crowds Orono News by I. Challice Quote - "Perhaps it is better to be irresponsible and right, than to be responsible responsible and wrong". Well finally our heat has let up and fresh cooler air has arrived. However, we're still quite dry and storms all around! Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kelly, Port Hope were Thursday visitors with the Challiccs. They brought us all the news of the annual Flower Heritage arrangements and afternoon tea, to be held Saturday, August 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Dorothy's House Museum, Garden Hill. For more information call Isabelle Challice at 983- 5824. At last Sunday's Newcastle United Church service, 16 new hymn books were dedicated in loving memory of the late Nancy by members of the Hancock families of Orono. The berry crop has been really excellent, black Solina News berries, raspberries and blueberries all in profusion! The oldtimers tell us a "sign of a hard winter! (Let's hope not). Hostage to a Good Cause Ward Three Councillor Troy Young, centre, is taken "hostage" by local youths in an attempt to raise awareness for the Firehouse Youth Centre, located at 132 Church Street in Bowmanvillc. Here, Kyle McOustra, Youth Council co-chair; Rcza Shaffaf, Youth Council chair; Chris Kreasul, co-chair of the Courtice Teen Centre; and Andrew Massey, chair of the Firehouse Youth Centre, portray the "bad guys." The stunt took place Wednesday, June 22, as the staff of the Bowmanvillc Youth Employment Centre held a barbecue to raise funds for the Firehouse. Down Tournament Raises $1,405 by Harvey Yellowlees "You know you're getting old when you know your way around, but you don't feel like going." "Teachers open the doors; you enter by yourself". Thanks for another lovely week. Everything looks good and crops are still growing. Farmers are combining barley barley now. The Barkcy family all attended the wedding of their son and brother Eric on Saturday. Our park maintenance man, Lome Wright, had the park in good condition for the annual Down tournament, held in memory of Wes Down. There were five teams entered for the "one pitch" tournament. One pitch made for some very interesting games. The pitcher controls the play. The family also sold food and drinks throughout the day. All proceeds go to •the Heart and Stroke fund. They raised $1,405.00. The Down family and mother Greta are given a big "thank you" for the work involved to organize this event. Cards at Hampton on Wednesday had 10 tables playing and lots of fun. Winners were high - Edgar Millson 89, Alice Beech 88, Lloyd Broome 79, Bernice Renton 76, Betty Kuyer 75. Low - Fred Ashton. Most lone hands, Richard Potter. Two little skunks entered the building. Agnes Schofield along with Richard Potter managed to look after them. Lucky draws - Fred Ashton, Edgar Millson, Bernice Renton 2, Richard Potter. This week will be the last card party until September. See you then and have a good holiday. Another Saturday event in the village was that Dennis Park and Cathy Carter hosted a party for Dennis' parents Gordon and Yvette Park of Ottawa, to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. About 30 guests attended. A special feature of the day was the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. White with their decorated horse and buggy to give the honoured couple a ride. There were games, food and much conversation. Everyone was back Sunday morning for brunch before leaving for home. Congratulations Gordon and Yvette. Church on Sunday was at Hampton. Greeters were Jim and Bcv Koss and Bob and Leah Werner. David Dcwcll was the lay reader. Eileen Burgess and David Dcwcll sang a lovely duct "Whispering Hope". The final day of Bible School was on Friday. Some 70-75 children attended. A big thank you to all the helpers for the week who helped make Sonlight Island vacation school a success. Several ladies took Dorothy Snowden to supper at the Dutch Oven for iter birthday, Saturday. Sunday was the Taylor picnic at the Base Line Community Centre. Around 70 relatives sat down to well- laden tables of main course and of course a variety of desserts. Don Taylor and C.D, Erb, co-presidents, conducted conducted business and introductions introductions of special visitors and new members to the family family tree. The David Larmcr family were in charge of the sports program. Next year's picnic is same place, same Sunday. A pleasant surprise for us to have Beryl and Ken Strong, of Ottawa arrive at the picnic.
