Page 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, July 29. 1998 Section Two Artist Recalls 1990 Tire Inferno by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Writer The black clouds that rose from 13 million burning burning tires in Hagcrsvillc, Ontario arc gone now but not forgotten About live years after the 1990 environmental disaster, images captured by news cameras and subsequent subsequent burial of the waste sparked artist Catherine Gibbon into creating her own 14 piece art exhibit titled "Unnatural Landscape". It is on view at the Visual Art Centre in Clarington until August 14. The Dundas artist lives Unnatural Landscape Show Opens at VAC about an hour from the Hagcrsvillc countryside. Gibbon said the small army of firefighters who worked around the clock for 17 days to control the blaze seemed stunned by the size and power of the lire. "A lot of the time they were standing still completely completely awestruck." The artist says her main intent is not to hit views over the head with political messages, or preach about environmental environmental fall-out, but rather to look at the powerful energy energy in fire. "Its awesome. I call i't a terrible beauty," she says. "The scale of the disaster disaster was so huge as to be almost a climate of its own mimicking the atmospheric atmospheric effects that occur naturally naturally in skies."
