The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, July 29, 1998 Page 3 ■ Device Deflates Tires to Halt Wanted Vehicles "Stop Stick" is New Tool for Police V STOP RIGHT THERE -- Former police officer, Fred Johns, holds a "Stop Stick" that is used to deflate the tires of cars being pursued. As a retired police officer, Fred Johns, was interested interested in hearing about an incident in which members of the Durham Regional Police successfully stopped a car on Highway 401 at Bowmanville earlier in the month. The car had been reported stolen and the driver faced a number of charges, including failure to stop for police and theft. Johns says he was especially pleased to learn that a relatively new piece of police equipment called a "stop stick" was used in halting the vehicle. The device in question is a tire deflating strip marketed in Ontario by Ontario Police Supplies. Johns works as a sales consultant for that firm. He told The Statesman that the lightweight (four pound) device can be thrown in the path of a speeding speeding car by an officer positioned safely at the side of a highway. The stop stick will deflate the tires with out causing a sudden blowout that might overturn the vehicle or cause other damage. Instead, the car simply simply becomes almost impossible to drive after about 15 seconds or within less than a kilometre. "To me, it's the best thing that's come along since the protective vests," he adds. Stop sticks have only recently been introduced into Ontario. But, they have been deployed in the U.S. much longer. In fact, they arc credited with halting halting over 1,600 vehicles without one injury. The stop stick was invented by an Indiana state trooper and has been on the market about five years. Johns says it's one thing to believe in a product, but it's better yet to find out the product has been successfully deployed during an incident almost in one's own back yard. "Even if I wasn't selling it, I'd endorse it," he said.
