Kite Flyers Cautioned Against Use of Wire The Product Safety Bureau (PSB) of Health Canada today issued an advisory to caution Canadians against the use of fishing wire or other types of metallic strings in building and flying kites. This advisory is being issued as a result of the death by electrocution of a Cobourg, Ontario man. The man, accompanied by his 10-year-old daughter, reportedly was using a fishing rod to fly a kite adjacent to his home. It was strung with metal fishing line. According to police reports, the wind took the kite and fishing line above the hydro wires and it contacted the wires. He was electrocuted and died at the scene. Health Canada's Hazardous Products Act prohibits the sale of kite strings made of a material that is a conductor conductor of electricity. Health Canada also cautions anyone building or repairing their own kite to be sure not to use this type of material for stringing it. Kite flyers arc reminded that as a necessary precaution, precaution, they should ensure their kites arc flying completely clear of all hydro and other overhead wires. Hydro Customers Beware Brokers May Be Trying to Sell You a Bill of Goods There's an old saying: if it sounds or looks too good to be true, it probably is. Thai's something Ontario electricity electricity customers should keep in mind if they're approached by eleetrieity brokers or marketers trying to sell them cheap electricity. Since the Ontario government released its policy paper on electricity restructuring in November, 1997 and achieved a June, 1998 First and Second Reading of Bill 35, the legislation aimed at making the electricity industry industry more competitive, electricity brokers have become more active across Ontario, seeking to sign up customers in anticipation of the competitive marketplace. But Municipal Electric Association (MEA) Chair Pauline Storks, a commissioner at Clarington Hydro, encourages eleetrieity customers to remember that competition competition isn't here yet. "Right now, we know that retail competition won't become a reality until some time in the year 2000," she said. "That's why electricity customers customers should take their time, shop around and take a long, hard look at any propositions from brokers before they sign a contract that might not be in their best longterm longterm interests." While Mrs. Storks said it was difficult to quantify the level of broker activity in Ontario, MEA President Bob Lake, general manager of the Peterborough Utilities Commission, adds that the MEA's 275 member utilities have received customer complaints and inquiries about door-to-door salespeople asking to see their electricity bills and offering to supply low-cost eleetrieity. "A lot of customers have told our local utilities that they thought they were dealing with utility personnel," lie said. "Some of them arc quite concerned when they find out they've signed a contract with a company they don't know anything anything about and that can't deliver on its contract until the year 2000." To help customers protect themselves and their options, the MEA has produced an Eleetrieity Shopper's Guide. The guide proposes a series of questions customers customers can ask the companies seeking their business, before they make an informed choice. Suggested questions questions range from "What's the name of the supplying company, who owns it and how long has it been in business?" business?" to "Where docs the energy come from?" and "Exactly how much will my eleetrieity cost, and how docs that compare to today's prices?"
