Keep Plastic Bags Out of the Blue Box The Region of Durham has been receiving a higher than normal level of plastic bag contamination in the Blue Box recycling program. This contamination is directly related to a plastic bag containing local advertising advertising flyers and brochures, being distributed by Canadian Media network. The message printed on the front of the "AD-BAG" encourages residents to recycle the plastic bags in with their Blue Box material. Plastic bags arc NOT recyclable in the Region's Blue Box program. "We arc very concerned about the message our residents residents arc receiving," says Peter Watson, the Region's Manager of Waste Management. "The only type of plastic plastic accepted in the Region's Blue Box recycling program is PETE, which can be identified by the recycling loop with a number "1" inside, printed on the container. The plastic AD-BAGS are not number "1" plastic and •they arc NOT recyclable in the Region's Blue Box recycling recycling program. Every day thousands of these plastic bags arrive at the Region's Recycling Centre mixed in with newspapers. Many are still unopened and contain flyers and brochures. These arc considered a serious contaminate by the paper mills that purchase Blue Box newspapers for paper recycling.
