"The proposed mega- mergers are motivated by greed and a desire to choke off domestic competition," said Nystrom. "The Finance Minister must act now to put a stop to these mergers and make the banking system more accountable to Canadian consumers and small business business owners." In announcing the NDP plan for a morc competitive competitive and accountable banking banking system, Nystrom remarked, "Canadians don't need bjgger banks; wc need better banks." The NDP plan includes the following following points: • Parliament should be given the final say when it comes to bank mergers. Such an important decision decision should not be left to the Finance Minister to make alone. • The federal government government should encourage the banks to pool their resources in international ventures to enhance their competitive strength without without reducing consumer choice at home. • The federal government government should force banks to disclose more information on lending activities. A community reinvestment act would reveal any pattern pattern of unequal lending and an independent credit ombudsman would act as an advocate for the interests interests of consumers and small business. • The federal government government should enhance competition competition in Canadian banking banking by broadening access to the Canadian payment system to allow insurance companies to offer banking banking services. • The unique contribution contribution of the credit union system must be recognized and enhanced. • The federal government government should force the banks to disclose information information on the cost structure of their service charges. The original Environmental Study Report indicated that numerous culverts conveying watercourses that support fisheries would need to be extended by a maximum of 2.2 m per end. The following modifications have been made to the length of some culvert extensions in order to stabilize the slopes around the watercourses. THE PROCESS This project followed an approved planning process. A letter lms been prepared as an addendum addendum to the Environmental Study Report to document these changes and lias been filed with the Ministry of the Environment (MOE). All applicable provincial and federal environmental agencies agencies have been consulted. This work will not commence until it is approved by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Construction will comply with all conditions and constraints constraints imposed by this approval. The review period will terminate on September 8,1998 after which time die Ministry may start construction. COMMENTS We are interested in hearing any comments or concerns, whicli.you may have.
