Stories from 1963 show Vanstonc Mill Pond being drained in an effort to find a clue. But after one week, reports in the Oshawa Times say the walking searches were called off. According to the story, even her father seemed to think further local searches would likely prove futile. Nothing had been found to explain Norccn's disappearance. disappearance. Bowmanvillc Town Council even went as far as to offer a $ 1,000 reward for "information concerning concerning the whereabouts" of the girl. The reward expired March 31, 1964, uncollected. According to Del. Hcasman, everyone involved is certain the girl was not a run-away. College Strike Averted From page 1 Oshawa, says he's "thrilled" a deal was reached. But he adds he wasn't completely surprised surprised by the settlement. There's been no contact made, no attempts to contact contact the family at all. That's just not human nature, especially at 13 years old. And there's no history of problems in the family," he says. A case this horrifying left the town reeling, says Del. Hcasman. "It was completely out of the realm of Bowmanvillc life in 1963 ... You've got to remember in 1963, this was quite a big case anywhere. Even in downtown Toronto, this would have stood out, particularly particularly in '63. So, I'm sure you can imagine the effect this would have had on small-town Bowmanvillc." The Canadian Statesman, in December of 1963, reported Norccn's family was still optimistic she would return unharmed. They had bought Christmas presents for the girl, in the hopes of her reappearance. A summer summer baseball team photo which ran in October of that year lists Noreen as simply being "absent." Det. Hcasman says the police file contains a great deal of information on interviews conducted in the case. And, since 1963, leads have come in from all over. They didn't slop when the search ceased. "The file is always kept open ... as late as the fall of 1996, there were two investigators assigned to this to follow up some leads that came in then, 33 years later," he recalls. The detective says the lips have often come from Norccn's family members. "You know, people talk to them ... the conversation will come up and something something will come to the forefront that the family wasn't aware of, so they'll contact the police," says Del. Hcasman. After 35 years, the trail is fairly cold. But Del. Hcasman says new tips arc always followed up. "Is it being actively worked on every day? No, it's not. But it's not closed cither... Once all the leads are exhausted, what do you do? You sit and wait for another tip to come in. We can assure you that any lead or any tip that comes in will be followed up," says Det. Hcasman. Anyone with any information information on the case should call Del. Hcasman at (905) 579-1520, ext. 5329. Information can also be handled through Durham Region Crime Stoppers at 436-8477. In spite of the 35 years which have passed since Norccn's disappearance, Del. Hcasman says there's still some hope of solving the case. "I'm always optimistic that we'll solve these 'whodunits,"' he says. * iv.i y»»"!- *•" ' - S' r - W.ilM - ,M lb *' Build - SW- ' H .lr - LI,M ***' E) „ _ owi* »'"• t|ji =| ,. p „„ „ r wS;» 7^':;::; 1 '"'""prr" H '" wmMP * 1 V r; E::.,d.,,i.., l ..^" h3, ' uW ' Bernard R.
