Baseball Player Off to Iowa J C by Brad Kelly Stall Writer An invitation to attend the tryout camp of a professional professional baseball team has landed Paul Drummond a partial scholarship at a Junior College in the United States. The Bowmanvillc resident resident left yesterday for Iowa Lakes Community College to pursue a life of academics and athletics. The odyssey began in June when Drummond was sent a letter of invitation invitation to attend a tryout camp for the Arizona Diamondbacks that was being held in Iowa. With his dad unable to gel time off work to make the 17- hour drive, his high school baseball coach, Doreen Ross, volunteered to make the trip. Players were put through a variety of hitting and throwing drills, including specific tests for catchers, which is Drummond's natural position. position. Though the tryout letter letter remains a mystery -- Drummond has no idea where he was originally scouted -- he made the most of his opportunity among the 50 players in attendance. "The junior college coach from Iowa was there and saw the way I play, and asked me if I wanted to come down," says Drummond of how the events unfolded during the tryout camp. He will be studying sports administration administration while at the school. He expects the calibre of play to increase dramatically dramatically from what he is used to. Some of the fastest pitchers he faces now can reach speeds of up to 85 mph, while the slowest pitchers south of the border border arc clocked at that speed. The 18-ycar-old estimates estimates that his new team will play between 15-20 games before Christmas, and another 50-70 during the regular season in the new year. During the March Break in 1999, the team is planning to attend a tournament in cither North Carolina or Florida. Looking back at how the events have unfolded this past summer, Drummond hasn't taken anything for granted. "There are so many baseball players out there, and I am just one of the lucky few," he said of his good fortune. PACKING UP -- Bowmanville's Paul Drummond has packed his bags and left for Iowa, where he has accepted accepted a partial scholarship to play baseball for Iowa Lakes Community College. The Bowmanvillc High School graduate expects to play close to 80 games during the school year. m B H Referee & Timekeeper Clinic Clarington Recreational Hockey League New Referees and Timekeepers welcomed Ref's - 14 years old - Timekeepers 13 years old Cost: $10.00 per person REFEREES MUST ATTEND BOTH DAYS TIMEKEEPERS MUST ATTEND 1 ST DAY Sunday, Sept. 20th, 9 a.m. ■ 5 p.m. G.
