St, John's News by Colin Beal Blackstoek Fair, 1998 is now just a collection of memories, but what great memories they are. The weather was absolutely gorgeous gorgeous and the warm temperature temperature assured that many lair- goers dropped in to our St. John's booth to sample our delicious ice cream. We, who served at the booth, learned quite a few things about ice cream during the course of the day. We learned that, even when surrounded surrounded by all the delicious cold stuff, one can get very hot working with ice cream. We also learned that it's a good idea to check out the recipe for chocolate sauce a day or two before the-fair rather than as the gates open! But the customers were really really understanding and we did run out of the chocolate long before the day was over. A straw poll of a few customers customers indicates that the general opinion of our Dublc Heders was "Yummy!" We'll be back he'xV'ycafwith the benefit of this year's experience. It was not only the ice cream which highlighted St. John's presence at the fair this year. We've always had some well-known parishioners parishioners winning ribbons for their skill and artistry in various various exhibition categories. This year, your reporter noticed a lot of St. John's names on ribbon-winning entries for cakes, cookies, jams, needle point and many other categories. Helen Nesbitt was all smiles as her grandchildren continued to gather ribbons in the livestock livestock shows and young Shannon Bongard, in addition addition to winning several ribbons ribbons for baking and other domestic arts, also took second second place in the 40-60 lb. category in the Children's Tractor Pull. Shannon was presented with a magnificent trophy for her win in this event and we hear that she just won't let it out of her sight. Congratulations to all winners and to all who exhibited and competed to make the fair a success. And a special "Yea!" for our St. John's entrants. August 29 was a special day for Linda and Lawrence McLaughlin. They both worked hard in the St. John's booth. It was also the day on which their new grandson, Riley William McPhail, made his first major public appearance accompanied by Mom and Dad (Lynn and Jim). Lawrence and Linda received lots of congratulations congratulations and some good natural ribbing on their achieving grandparent-hood. And all this attention was particularly particularly appropriate, for on that same day they celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary! anniversary!
